PATENT CFFIGE,
UNITED STATES SAMUEL REYNOLDS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PATTERNS FOR CASTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,127, dated December 22, 1874; application filed October 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL REYNOLDS, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Snap-Hook Molds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of my improved snap-hook patterm. Fig.2 is a cross-section of the mold containing the pattern. Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views of the sections of the mold. Fig. 5 is a transverse section.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the casting of hooks, and especially of snaphooks and others, where the plane of the beak at one end is at right angles with the plane of the strap-loop at the other end; and it consists in the construction and novel formation of a pattern having at one end a wide fastening plate or loop, and at the other end a hook, the plane of which is at right angles with the plane of said loop, and which is connected with said loop by a skeleton body constructed with bars extending to the root of the hookbeak, and spaced sufficiently to allow of the drawing of the moldcore, which extends between the bars to the inside of said hookbeak, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the sections of the molds, or the top and bottom parts thereof, whereby the body of a snap-hook may be cast. B indicates the pattern of a snap-hook body, consisting of aloop,a, plate b, bars 0, hook d, and bridge 0, as describedfull y in my application for a pattern for snap-hook, now pending before the United Stateslatent Office. Themold-sectionAis provided with a large recess, a, to receive the long projection 22 of the section A. At the bottom of this recess is a central longitudinal groove, 1), which forms the outer face of the hook d; also, atransverse groove, 0, which is designed to mold the exterior face of the bridge 0, these two parts of the pattern being so formed that, in the ordinary manner of casting, if the skeleton body were not constructed as described, false cores would be required. From the brim of the recess a, backward and forward, extend longitudinal grooves d, which meet at their forward ends, and at their rear ends terminate in a rectangular or loop groove, 6. The
opposite mold-section A is provided with the elongated projection c, which tapers upward from its base, andis designed to extend into and fit neatly the flaring recess a of the section A. In this projection 12 are formed recesses or grooves b and a, corresponding to the grooves b and c of the recess a, and serving, respectively, to mold the inner surfaces of the hook-beak and bridge. This section A is also provided with longitudinal grooves 61' at the base of the projection v, opposite the grooves d of the section A, and merging at the rear into the shallow recess 1%, which forms the transverse body-plate. From this recess extends the rectangular or loop-shaped groove 6, which corresponds with the groove 0 of the opposite mold. a indicates a flat projection, which forms the recessed springseat in the transverse body-plate; and o is a stud or projection of the section A, which molds the rivet-hole through said plate in said seat.
The follow-board employed with this pattern should correspond in its form with either moldsection described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pattern for a hook constructed with a skeleton body, 0 0, and loop a, forming recesses for the cores, which consist of a portion of the mold, so that the said pattern may be drawn, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL REYNOLDS.
