UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHAPLET FOR FOUNDRY USE.
Application fi ed January I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KovANnA, a citizen of United States, residing at W est Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chaplets for Foundry Use, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chaplets for foundry purposes and has among its objects to provide a simple, novel and useful chaplet which is particularly adaptable for supporting heavy and long cores.
Another object of the invention resides in the novel construction of the heads of the chaplet which ensures the core-supporting device becoming an inseparable part of the casting.
IVith these and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel construction and combination of the parts and members shown in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specifications, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1, is a plan view of my preferred chaplet construction Figure 2, is a vertical section of same taken on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3, is a plan View of a modified form of chaplet construction; and,
Figure 4, is a vertical section of same taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figures 5 and 6 show sections of two forms of corner construction taken on line mw of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing and particularly Figures 1, 2, 5 and 6, the chaplet consists of an intermediate member 10 which may be formed of either round or rectangular cross section and which member terminates in integral collar formations 11 of slightly in creased cross sectional area.
Integral with the collars 11 the chaplet. is formed with heads 12 of substantially recangular shape having the corners 12 thereof cut at angle and arranged with depending or inwardly extending integral ortions, one form of which is shown in Fig. 5 and indicated by numeral 12 The 31, 1925. Serial No. 5,989.
inner face 12 of the corner portions 12 is formed at an angle to the outer face thereof and in a manner to allow the metal of the casting to form around and between the portions 12 whereby the heads 12 will be prevented from loosening and disengaging from the body of the casting but will y reason of said inner faces 12 being inclined inwardly be held more positively in the wall of the casting.
In Figure 6, I show a modified integral corner portion 12 the inner face 12 of which is formed inclined outwardly.
In the modification shown by Figures 3 and 4, the heads 13 are substantially rectangular with the corners 13 thereof slightly rounded and with the peripheral edge formed with an inward groove 13 of V section. It is readily apparent that the V groove will allow the metal of the casting to seat therein and thus insure the loosening or disengagement of the head from the body of the casting formed around same.
One of the heads 12 and 13 in the cases illustrated is formed with an integral central extending stem 14 preferably of conical formation for insertion and support of the chaplet in the sand mould.
Having described my improved chaplet, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A chaplet comprising an intermediate portion of round cross section having substantially rectangular heads integral with the ends thereof, and a conical stem integral with one of said heads and in alignment with said intermediate portion, the corners of said heads being cut at an angle to the edges thereof and formed with integral depending or inwardly disposed extensions, whereby said extensions will afford a locking engagement of said heads with the wall of the casting to prevent disengagement therefron'i.
2. A chaplet as embodied in claim 1, and
including collars formed integrally with said heads and. said intern'lediate portion, said collers having a cross sectional area intermediate the area of said headand the cross sectional area of said portion.
In witness whereof I afiix my signature. JOSEPH KOVANDA.
