CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,650, dated December 30, 1890. Applica i n fi November 23, 1889. Serial No. 331,313. (No'modehi To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shedds, in the county of Linn and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Clevis, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clevises; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved clevis. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing it arranged to permit the removal of the clevis-pin.
The clevis-bodyA is of the usual U -shaped formation, and is provided in its ends with the openings B, through which the clevis-pin O is inserted. The opening B in the upper side of the clevis-body has a notch D in one side, and the clevis-pin is provided with a log E, which is adapted to pass through said notch and engage under the upper arm of the clevis-body. A leaf-spring F is secured rigidly to the upper end of the clevis-pin at right angles to the lug E and is tapered toward its free end, as clearly shown. This spring is adapted to engage between the lugs G on the upper side of the clevis-body, and thereby lock the clevis-pin in its place.
In practice the body of the clevis is passed over the link or lap-ring, after which the clevis-pin is inserted through the openings in the ends of said body, so as to engage the said link or ring, and it is then turned so that the end of the spring will slip between the lugs G, as clearly shown. The pin will thus be securely locked in the clevis-body, so that it will be effectually prevented from acoidental displacement. The lug on the clevispin engages against the inner side of the clevis-body, and thereby prevents endwise movement of the pin, while the spring fitting between the lugs on the body prevents rotation of the pin, so that it is impossible for the pin to be removed until properly manipulated by the operator.
The device is very simple and its advant-ages'are thought to be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
The improved clevis, consisting of thebody having openings in its ends, one of said openings having a radial notch and the body being further provided with the lugs G on its upper side, the clevis-pin inserted through the openings and having a lug adapted to pass through the radial notch, and the spring secured rigidly to the clevis-pin and adapted to engage between the lugs G, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN DUNCAN.
