SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,566, dated December 80, 1890.
Application filed August 5, 1889. Serial No. 319,793. (No model.)
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BRoBsr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbus, county of Franklin,State of Ohio, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in lVashing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing-machines; and it consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.

Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a portion of the bottom of the tub, showing the manner of securing the connecting-rod thereto. i' A is the supporting-frame, having a leg portion B, made of any suitable metal. At the apex of said leg portion is provided channel portions a a a2, channel a extending in Wardly and facing upwardly. Channel a is vertical, facing inwardly, and channel a2 is vertical, facing outwardly. In the vertical channels a and a2 is placed a vertical standard D, secured therein by bolts passed through the standards and the perforations a3 a4 in chan-- nels a and a2 in the leg portion; and in the horizontal channels a is placed a horizontal cross-bar E, secured therein by bolts passed through the bar and the perforations a5 in the log portion, thus forming a light, yet strong metal plate K, having a central perforation v d to correspond with the central socket a7 in the step J; also, corresponding perforations for bolts by which the parts J and K are secured to the bottom of the tub; or, if preferred, the central portion of the box J may be lengthened and passed through the bottom of the tub from the under side upward through the bottom. The object sought is a single central pin secured to the supportingframe, with an inverted step-box secured to the bottom of the tub to rest upon and rotate about said pin as a pivotal support for the tub, thus avoiding the construction as well as the cost of an intermediate oscillating frame as a support for the tub.
A bifurcated bracket L is secured to one ot the vertical posts D, the outer end portions of the prongs a8 a9 of which are parallel with the outer face of the lever M. Trunnions b b2 project inwardly from said prongs, and one of said trunnions has a screw-threaded engagement with its prong. The said trunnions fit in boxes b3, and by means of the threaded trunnion all wear is. compensated for, or the said latter trunnion may be screwed out of engagement with the box b3 and the lever may then be removed.
A connecting-rod box N, as shown in Fig. 8, is formed of two similar parts, each having a body portion d', an angle wing` portion d2, out wardly-projected lugs cl3, and a spherical box portion d4, the Winged portions@2 extending along the body portion d', and bolts, as d, are passed through the lugs d3, by which the parts are secured together, thus forming a spherical or ball-shaped box having an oblong opening dY on its front side for the accommodation of a connecting-rod. One of these boxes is placed at the lower end portion of the lever M for the rod O and one at its upper end portion for the rod O, and they are secured thereto by bolts d8.

On the bottom portion ot the tub F is cured a casting P, of the form substantially as shown iu Figs. 5, 6, and 7, having a [iat body portion, as 72, by which it is secured to the tub, and downwardly and inwardly projected flange portions 71.', forming slides, on which is placed a box-supporting plate Q, said plate having outwa-rdlyprojected wings 71T2 to rest on the lower lface of the iianges 7i', a body portion 7i18 to slide between the flanges 7L and a nut 714, the said nut projecting from the sides ot' the body portion over the inner face of the ilange 71,', and is adjusted and secured in desired adjustments by turning the thumb-screw 715, which has a shoulder ZJ to bear against the under face of the plate A, into the nut 7L", thereby clamping the iianges 7L between the wings 7i'2 of the slide P and the nut 714.
On the end ot the plate c there is provided aspherical box 7i, in which is placed a balljournal portion formed on the end of the connecting-rod O', thus forming a ball-and-socket joint, by which the connecting-rod is loosely secured to the bottom of the tub, a similar ball on the other end of the connecting-rod resting in a similar box at the lower end of the actuating-lever M.
The rubber It is oscillatcd by the use of the arm S,secured to and projected from a vertical-shaft portion T, secured to the rubber R, and a connecting-rod O similar to the one hcreinbefore described as O', said rod forming a ball-and-socket con nectiou between the lever )I and the arm S. The lower face of rubber R may be provided with radial ribs 7i?.
A false bottom U is provided, which is secured to the tub by arms V. The upper face ot the bottom U is provided with adial ribs 7L"`. The arms Y are bifurcated, as shown, forming prongs 7;, and the lower ends of said prongs are secured to the bottom U a short distance apart. rIhe arms V are situated diametrically opposite each other or thereabout. The upper end portion is provided with a handle portion 7:.' and an oblong perforation k2. Ahook 7113, that will pass through the perforation 7t2,isprovided, which is turned by a turn-button 7;.4 on the outside of the tub. The prongs secured to the false bottom serve to hold the betteln in position, rendering the usual means employed to secure the false to the permanent bottom unnecessary. I wish to callparticularattention to the convenience and eeonomymof this feature of construction, as by the use of the arms V, secured as they are to the false bottom and to the sides of the tub, said bottom is securely held in position during the operation of the machine in washing, and by releasing the arms from the sides of the tub by the use of the turn-button 7.54 the hook 71:3 may be passed through and out of the perforations 7u?, thus releasing the arms V, by which the bottomUwith the wash may be'removed from the tub. I'Ieretofore hooks and staples have been used to secure the bottom U to the bottom of the tub, which were hooked and unhooked by thrusting the hands down through the hot water and with the fingers between the said bottoms operate the hooks.
To remove the rubber R from the tub, the bolt 75" at the end portion of the cross-bar Vt is released from its connection with the standard D and the bar with the rubber raised out and supported by the hinged connection 15 to the supporting-frame A.
I will now call particular attention to the operating` parts ot' the machine. It will be noticed that the distance on the lever M from the fulcrum Z, formed by the bracket L, to the connecting-rod box N is less than the distance from said'fulcrum to the connecting rod box N, by which arrangement the rotary movement ot the rubber' R is greater than the rotary movement of the tub, and thus the greater power isapplied to the movement of the tub and its burden.
In ope 1ation the lever M is reci procated back and forth, thus imparting to the tub and rubber It opposite rotary movements, as is common in machines of this class, and by this action the clothes are rapidly and thoroughly cleansed.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a washing-machine, of a tub F, supporting-frame A, having metal leg portions l5, provided with channel portions a, a', and a2, in which are secured a crossbar E and standards- @substantially as described, and for the purpose setforth.
2. The colnbination, ina washing-machine, of a tub-supporting frame having leg portions B, as described, a cross-bar E, and standards D, of a spindle G, secured to said cross-bar, a tub having a central perforation in its bottom portion, an inverted step-box J, secured over said perforation, and a perforated plate K, secured about said perforation, the two parts .I and K secured to said bottom portion and together, an actuating-lever M, pivotally secured to said frame and connected to tub, whereby said tub may be turned on its pivot, substantially as set forth.
8. In combination with the tub F, a false bottom U, biturcated arm V, provided at their lower end portions with prongs 7a, spread apart a distance, and said arms V secured to said bottom diametrically opposite, or thereabout, and each formed at its upper end portion with an aperture 7a2 and a handle portion 7u', and a turn-button or hook to take into said aperture, by which the arms may be removably secured to the tub to hold the false bottom in rigid relation to the tub when in op eration or to raise the said bottom out of the tub, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
