Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
Application filed August 21, 1911, Serial No. 645,291.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACQUES D. WILLIOME, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing- Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in washing machines and has for its object a rotating washing receptacle placed in operation by a motor located beneath the same.
A further object of my invention is to provide a suitable support on which is mounted a motor and on said support is axially mounted a washing receptacle, which is to be placed in partial rotation by the operation of the motor.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a washing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the support showing the location and position of the motor. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the casting attached to the under side of the washing receptacle. Fig. 4 is a detail top plan view of the casting attached to the legs of the support and on which the motor is mounted. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail perspective views of the locking members carried by the washing receptacle and the frame, by which the washing receptacle is held in stationary and locked position.
In the construction of my invention I provide a base constructed preferably of three legs 7, to the upper ends of which is suitably and rigidly attached a casting 8. This casting is provided with an elongated projection 9 on which is mounted and securely fastened a motor 10, this motor being of a construction similar to the one on which Letters Patent have been granted to me August 23rd, 1910, No. 968,016. On the piston 11 of the motor is attached a rack bar 12 which is guided in the lugs 13 formed on the casting 8. The casting 8 is also provided wlth a vertical projecting bracket 1 1 which terminates at its upper end in a bearing 15, and on the plate of the casting 8, and in vertical alinement with the bearing 15 is formed a socket 16. In the end of the socket is inserted an adjusting screw 17, which contacts with and is adapted to adjust a ball-bearing 18.
In the socket and on the ball-bearing is located a pivot pin 19, the upper end 20 of said pin being supported in the bearing 21 formed in the bracket 22, which forms a part of the casting, which is firmly secured to the under side or bottom of the washing receptacle 23.
The bracket with a toothed segment 24, the teeth of which are arranged to mesh with the teeth of the rack bar 12. The bearing 25 of the rack bar 12, by which the rack is supported on the piston rod 11 is arranged a short distance above the alinement of the teeth so as to permit the segment to rotate with the reciprocatory action of the piston and rack without interference.
The casting of which the segment 24: is a part is provided with projecting perforated ears 25 by which said casting is secured to the receptacle bottom, the plate, of which the ears 25' form a part is provided with a central opening 26 through which the bearing 15 of the bracket 14 projects (see Fig. 1).
The washing receptacle is provided with a central tube 27 which extends through the bottom and telescopes part of the bearing 15. Through this tube is passed a square supporting bar 28, the lower end of which is turned down to be inserted and fit in the opening formed in the bearing 15, and the same is held from turning by means of a set-screw 29.
On the bar 28 is secured a cap 30 which fits over the top of the tube 27 and also acts as a stop for the yoke 31. limiting the downward movement of the dasher plate 32 to which said yoke is attached, and the said dasher plate together with the yoke is pre-. vented from turning during the partial rotation of the receptacle by means of the square rod 28.
Attached to the legs 7 of the base is a pair of brace bars 33 connected together by the cross bar 3 1, the upper ends being connected to a cross bar To the brace bars 33 and the cross bar 35 are attached vertical members 36, the upper ends provided with a bar 37 on which the wringer is to be supported. The uprights together with the brace bars 38 and cross bar 35 are again restrengthened by the short uprights 38 extending downwardly and connected to the ends of the bar 39.
On the side of the receptacle, and on the cross bar 35 is placed a locking device which consists of two members a0 and ll, the member 4C0 being provided with a tooth 42 and the member ll provided with a slot or recess 22 of this casting is provided 43 formed in the flange 44, the under side of said flange being suitably rounded or tapered so as to permit the plate 45, of which the flange forms a part, to rise upwardly on its pivot 16 when the tooth 42 comes in contact with the curved or in clined surface, and when the tooth comes in proper alinement with the recess 43 the same will automatically seat itself and hold the receptacle in rigid position.
The plate 45 is pivoted between the cars 47 which are formed on a plate 48, which is firmly secured to the cross bar 35 and said plate is provided with a projecting perforated ear 4-9, which projects through a slot 50 formed in the plate 45 and through the eye may be inserted a padlock when desiring to securely lock the machine and prevent the same from being operated.
While the washing machine is in operation and the receptacle being placed in oscillatory movement by the motor, the plate 45 of the locking member 41 is thrown back on its pivot 46 so that the flange is entirely out of contact with the lug or tooth 42.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to havesecured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is:
fiopies '01 this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 1. A device of the class described comprising a base, a casting forming the top of said base, a stationary rectangular dasher supporting rod supported by the casting; a toothed segmental casting; a pivot pin carried by said casting and supported in a socket formed in the base casting, in combination with a receptacle to which the toothed segmental casting is fixed, substantially as specified.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base, a casting mounted thereon, an arm formed integral with said casting; a rectangular dasher supporting rod supported in the arm, a socket formed in the casting and in which is mounted an adjusting screw; a toothed segmental casting, in combination with a receptacle to which the same is attached; a pivot pin located in the casting and projecting into the socket, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
