Description

T. HIPWELL.
LAMP HANGER.
(No Model.)
Patented Dec. 30, 1890.
- 1 UNITED STATE PATENT OEEICE.
THOMAS HIPWELL, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PITTSBURGH BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LAM P-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,521, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed June 25, 1890. Serial No. 356,658. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs HIPWELL, a resident of Allegheny city, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lam p-Hangers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to, harps or hangers for lamps-that is, to a device for the suspension of a lamp from a ceiling or suitable bracket.
The object of my invention is to provide a suspension device in which the lamp-fou nt, together with the chimneysupported thereon, may be inserted within the hanger without having to tilt orincline said fount or-chimney, thus removing the liability of the breaking or cracking of the chimney by having the flame come in contact therewith on the tilting of the same, cracking of the chimney by striking the shade, or spilling the oil from the fount.
A further object is to provide a hanger which will support the fount firmly in position and prevent any liability of its dropping when roughly handled or jolted.
To these ends my invention comprises, generally stated, a lamphanger having a ring at the base thereof, lugs formed on the interior face of said ring at opposite points, and a spring-bail having arms engaging with said lugs and extending out beyond the same for the support of the fount resting in said ring.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of my improved hanger supporting the lamp. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the supportingring.. Fig. 3 is a top view showing springarms in engagement with the lugs. Fig. 4 is a section on the line t 4, Fig. 3; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views showing the two positions of the bail.
Like letters indicate like parts.
The hanger c is shown formed of wire bent to proper shape and having a hook or loop I) at the upper end thereof to engage with a suitable hook or loop secured to the ceiling or bracket. At the base of the hanger a is the ring 0, said ring being formed with the inwardly-extending flange d at the upperedge thereof. On the lower edge of the ring 0 and on the interior face thereof are formed the lugs or cams c, at points directly opposite each other, and each on the same side of the central line of the ring. The lugs e are rounded off, as at f, and are also provided with the small indentations, as at g, forming a slight shoulder, for the purpose more fully hereinafter set forth. A slight enlargement h is formed on the exterior of the ring 0 just beyond the lugs e, and within said enlargement is formed the recess 2', in which the arm of the spring-bail j rests when not engaging with the lugs e. The bail j is formed of stiff spring-Wire and bent to the semicircular form, its ends being bent at substantially right angles to the bail to form the arms 70, and the journals Z, which are bent at substantially right angles to the arms It, being journaled in the bearings m in the enlargements h and at the upper ends of the recesses 2'. If desired, a second auxiliarybail a maybe employed to strengthen the support given by the bail j, the said auxiliarybail n being jour naled, as at o, in the ring 0, and being further provided with the loop p, adapted to engage with the bail j.
To provide for the supporting of the fount of the lamp within the hanger it has been customary to construct .said fonnts with a shoulder or annular flange encircling said fount at its point of greatest circumference,
this flange being shown at r, and in the ordinary harp this flange resting on top of the harp-ring.
To insert the fount within the hanger a the bail and its auxiliary bail n will be raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, when the fount held in this position by one hand while the bail j is grasped by the other, when by a quick movement of the hand enough force is exerted to overcome the resistance to the arms 71 due to the lugs cgwhereby said spring-arms travel over the faces of the lugs e and assume 5 the horizontal position shown in Figs. 1, I l, and 6. The rounded faces j aid to renderthe movement of the spring-arms over said lugs more easy, and said arms having passed said lugs spring back to the position above said lugs, but project farenongh beyond said lugs to give a flrm support to the fonnt, the lower face of the annular flange 1' thereof resting on the arms 7;, which are SllppOltetl on the lugs c. The shoulders 1 form an abutment for the portion of the bail just beyond the arms 7: and further assist to render the engagement secure against any violent shak- 5 ing or handling of the hanger. In this manner the fount is locked Within the ringewith out having to tilt the fount or chimney in the slightest degree, and as the upper edge of the annular flange r bears agaii'ist the flange (Z and the arms I.: bear against the lower face of the flange r the lamp is lirmly held against upward or downwardmovement in the ring. The bailj also serves as a handle for the raising or lowering of the hanger, the tension of the spring-bail and its arms 7.: being sufficient to prevent liability of displacement of said bail in ordinary handling.
To further supplement the resistance of the bailj to lateral movement, the auxiliary bail 12, which is mounted at right angles to the bailj, may be lowered, the loop 1) thereof engaging with the bail. To remove the fount, the operator grasps the bailj, and by applying force enough to overcome the resistance due to the shoulders g the arms 7; resume their former vertical position within the recesses '2', removing all obstructions to the low ering of the fount from the ring 0, and it can then be lowered directly from the ring.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is
1. .in a lamp-holder, the combination, with the hanger, of a ring at the base thereof, a bail journaled in the ring, and cam mechanism for contracting the bail, so that the bail when so contracted forms a support for the fount, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In a lamp-holder, the combination, with the hanger, of a ring at the base thereof, said ring having lugs formed on the interior face thereof at opposite points thereon, and a bail journaled in the ring and provided with arms engaging with said lugs and extending beyond the same for the support of the fonnt, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In a lanai-holder, the combination, with the hanger, of a ring at the base thereof, said ring having an in\vatally-extending flange at the upper edge thereof, and lugs formed on the lower edge of said ring at opposite points thereon, and a bail journaled in said ring having arms engaging with said lugs and ex tending beyond the same for the support of the fount, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
i. In a lamp-holder, the combination, with the hanger (t, of the ring 0, having the flange d, lugs e, and recesses :I, and the bailj, having the arms 7,: at an angle to the bail, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In a lamp-holder, the combination, with the hanger a, of the ring 0, having the lugs c, the bail j, having the arms 7:, and the auxiliary bail 21, having the loop substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said THOMAS IITPWELL, have hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS llIl\\'lCl)L.
