B. GAS H'. DENTAL MOUTH SPEGULUM.
No.- 443,512. Patented Dec. 30, 1890.
mwmtoz WWW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR GASH, OF MACOMB, ILLINOIS.
DENTAL MOUTH-SPECULUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4A3,512, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed April 18, 1890. Serial No. 348,588. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR GASH, of Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dental Mouth-Support and Adjustable Mirror Combined, of which the following description will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a dental mouth-support having combined therewith an adjustable mirror, all of which will be fully described in the following de scription and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 on the line y y. Figs. 4 and 5 are detached parts, which will be referred to hereinafter.
A in the drawings represents a strong frame made of spring-wire bent into the shape shown in Figs. 1 and 2, forming spring-jaws s s, to which the guards f f are firmly at tached.
B represents a metal sheath, into which the rear part of the frame is placed (shown in dotted lines, Fig. l) and is secured to the sheath by the rivets e e, which pass through the sheath and the upper ends of the wire frame A, securing the sheath and frame together.
J represents a mirror, which is attached to the disk 0 ata (see Fig. 3) by means of the projecting ears 2' i, (see Figs. 3 and 5,) forming a flexible hinge, underneath which the spiral spring d is placed. One end of the spring rests against the hinge a, the other against the back of the sheath, and the object of this spring dis to press against the disk 0 sufficiently to keep the disk up against the inside of the front part of the sheath (see Fig. 3) with sufficient force to keep the disk in any position that it may be placed in, the pressure of the spring against the hinge of the mirror producing sufficient friction to keep the mirror in any position that it may be placed in. The mirror can be slid either up or down in the slot it (see Fig. 1) or turned to either side and swung out, (see Fig. 2,) as maybe required by the operator to reflect the part to be operated upon.
0 e c 0 represent raised ribs on the back of the sheath to catch on the teeth to prevent the support from slipping when in operation. The space an on the back of the sheath (see Fig. 4) is for a way on the inside of the back of the sheath for the spring d to slide on when the mirror is being slid either up or down in the slot at.
The operation is as follows: The mouthsnpport is used in connection with rubber dam and a rubber-dam clamp. The rubber dam and clamp are placed on the tooth to be operated upon in the usual manner. Then the mouth-support is placed in the mouth with the jaws .5- s of the frame A over the tooth to be operated upon. Then suitable forceps are placed between the jaws of the frame A at h and the jaws are pressed apart (the sheath B being made sufficiently wide for that purpose) sufficient to allow the jaws to pass down over the rubber-dam clamp described above. The forceps being removed, the jaws will spring together and hold to the teeth and clamp sufficient to hold the support firm in the mouth. The inner guard f holds the tongue down and the outer guard f presses the lip out of the way. The mirror J, being attached to the sheath B in a fleXi-' ble manner, can be placed in any required position that is necessary to reflect the tooth to be operated upon. The support is sufficiently strong to hold the mouth open. The guardsff by holding the tongue down and the lip out of the way allow the operator the freedom of both hands.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A dental mouth-support composed of the wire frame A, having spring-jaws s s and guards ff, and the sheath B, having ribs 0 c c 0 attached, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A dental mouth-support having a wire frame formed U shape, having spring-jaws s s and guards ff, and the sheath B, having slot 91. and ribs 0 c c c, in combination with the adjustable mirror J and yielding spring d, substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
EDGAR GASII.
