SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,264, dated December 23, 1890.
Application filed September 1, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SPARKS, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon,to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an iinprovementin locks, and more particularly to the hubs or roll-backs of latch mechanisms designed to be secured to one side of a door and connected by a coupling-bar located in a transverse opening therein, with a pin-lock mechanism ap plied to the opposite side of the door, the object of my invention being to produce a simple, cheap, and strong hub or roll-back adapted, without detrimentally modifying the latch mechanism of which it forms a part, to in itself compensate for the variations produced by variation in the thickness of doors and in the surplus length of the bars, which must be long enough as supplied to the trade to answer for the thickest doors and yet are not easily shortened for thinner doors by the consumer.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a hub constructed as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the hub, which is of cylindrical shape, provided on one side with arms A A, projecting in opposite directions and in a plane at right angles to the axis of the hub, substantially as in the usual construction. From the arm side of the hub a slot is cut diametrically inward, openfrom the arm side Serial No. 368,614. (No modeli) and across the hub, so as to make a clear slot across the hub and extending nearly through the hub, leaving sufficient material at the opposite end to support the two parts or prevent their separation. The hub is cast as usual and the slot is cut with a milling-tool, the length of the slot corresponding to the thickness of the coupling-barC. The depth of the slot is sufficient to compensate for the varia* tions in the surplus length of the coupling bar C, produced by variations in the thickness of the door D. By forming the slot clear across the hub and between its arms I am enabled to adapt the hub to compensate for variations in the surplus length of the coupling-box with the minimum of expense, as the operation is simply one of free milling. Heretofore hubs have been constructed with alongitudinal opening into the end of the hub corresponding in width and thickness to the width and thickness of the connectingbar; but in that construction the hub was necessarily made in two parts and is expensive when compared with the milling operation required in this invention. Hubs have also been provided for a similar adjustment of the connecting-bar by bifurcating the end of the bar and boring holes longitudinally into the end of the hub for the forked end of the bar; but this, also, is an expensive construction when compared with the construction of this invention. The slot receives the inner end of the coupling-bar to a greater or less depth, according to the thickness of the door, and is deep enough to take up the surplus length of the coupling-bar, produced by thin doors, and hence by all doors of intermediate thickness up to ordinary thick doors, which will take up the bar, so as to leave only enough extra [0 of a depth somewhat short of the Whole length of the hub, substantially as and pose described.
