SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,195, dated December 23, 1890. Application fil d August 1, 1890. Serial No- 360.628. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MINGLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices forElectric VVires,of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety devices for telegraph, telephone, or
other wires adapted to conduct currents of damage from said abnormal currents to the instrument, buildings, or operatives.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a plan of my safety device; Fig. 2, a bottom view ofthe base of the same; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the device; Fig. 4, an end elevation, and Fig. 5 an'end view, of pivoted armature.

Pivoted to bracket B is an arm 0, upon the outer end of which is an armature D.
E is a coil-spring,one end of which is secured to bracket B and the other to arm C, and which always tends to raise this aim.
F is a detent, the lower part of which is secured to the base A and which holds arm 0 during the passage of normal currents.
G is an electro-magnet secured to base A and electrically connected with detent F by a wire a, Fig. 2.
Secured to the upper part of and forming part of the core of magnet G is a piece of metal H, one part of which, as I, is bent up so as to be opposite the armature D on arm 0 and the other part of which lies along the top of the spool and has pivoted to it an arma ture J. v
Upon the lower part of the magnet G is a piece of metal K which forms part of the core of the magnet. This piece of metal extends out to or a short distance beyond the spool, as shown. r
L is a bracket which carries a threaded bar M, upon the inside end of which is a head or contact-point N. The bar M passes through a hole J in armature J ,which holeis sufiiciently large that the bar M will not touch the armature. O is an adjustable non conducting washer upon this bar M. The bracket L is connected with the ground.
'P is the instrument-post, which is electrically connected with magnet G.
The instrument being set as shown in the drawings, the arm 0 being held by detent F, the normal current passes from line-wire to bracket B, to arm 0, to detent F, to magnet G, to instrument-post P, and thence to the instrument. lVhen adangerous current passes over the line, it vpasses to bracket B, to arm C, to detent F, thence to magnet G, which it energizes. At this instant armature J is attracted by the piece of metal K, connected to the core of magnet G, and this armature is drawn in and makes contact with the headN on bar M and the current passes to ground. As soon as the contact between armature J and head N is made the instrument is cut out of the circuit and the current is concentrated on magnet G for the purpose of sufliciently energizing this magnet to.attract the armature D on arm C. \Vhen this armature and arm are attracted by the projecting piece I, secured to the core of the magnet, the arm C is drawn out of detent F, and the springE immediately raises this arm, breaking the line until arm 0 is again in electrical contact with catch F. The magnet G is of such low resistance that it cannot operate until energized by the abnormal current. The instrument is adapted to be placed vertically, as shown in the drawings, so that armature J will by gravity rest against insulating-piece 0 until it is drawn from it by an abnormal or dangerous current. The insulating-piece 0 may be set in or out upon the bar M, so as to increase or decrease the throw of armature J.

of parts shown in the drawings may be considerably varied without departing from the spirit of my invention that is, the arrangement of the arm 0 and its connected parts may be varied, my invention consisting, principally, in the device for concentrating I the abnormal current upon the magnet G in order to energize this magnet to attract and operate devices for breaking the line.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. I11 combination with an electro-magnct and a disengagingarm connected to line and carrying an armature and devices for disengaging this arm upon the attraction of the armature, an auxiliary armature adapted to i be attracted by said electro'magnet and a ground-connection, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l 2.
