Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT B. HUGUNIN, OF CLEVELAND, -OH[O.
IMPROVED CLOTH ES-WRINGING MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,313, dated September 20, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT B. HUGUNIN, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga., and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful shaft for securely attaching, stretching, and holding sheet-rubber or other soft, elastic, or pliable substance for wringing clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents the drivin g-shaft, with sheet adjusted, put together, and complete. Fig. 2 represents the upper or other shaft, with rubber or sheet attached, ready to be adjusted or rolled up, as Fig. l; Figs. 3 and 4., adjusting rings or collars.; Fig. 5, cross-section of Fig. l, showing the position of the sheet when adjusted and the manuel' of fastening and holding it secure; Fig. 6, cross-seetion of a strip of rubber or other substance that may be used or clamped between the two edges of the sheet forming the roll.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in all the figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings, A represents a metal or wooden shaft in two parts, each hollowed out in the center, so as when put together to form a shell. One'edge of each of these parts is made sufficiently thin to compress or clampl the two edges ofthe sheet when the two parts are united or adjusted. Along the cla-mp i edges of each part small holes may be drilled for fastening the opposite edges of the sheet by rivets.
B is a sheet of rubber, or other substance that will answer the purpose, securely attached to the two parts of the shaft A by means of rivets, or otherwise securely. Over this sheet cloth may be used to prevent the staining of clothes by Contact with the rubber while wringing; this cloth to be fastened to the edges of the shaft with the rubber and to be ofsufcient width to allow the edges to be turned under and held between the rubber and shaft.
C C are two collars or adjusting rings passed over the ends of ythe shaft A, when its parts are pressed together, for the purpose of securely holding them together; D D D, &c., rivets; E, point on the driving-shaft when the crank is attached. In operation two of these shafts are used, (as in other wringers,) clothes being passed between them while turning the crank, coming out comparatively dry on the opposite side.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The sectional shafts A A, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The sheets B B, adjusted substantially as and for the purposes specified.
It. B. HUGUNIN.
