lNKlNG-PAD FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,032, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed October 5, 1888. Serial No. 287,335. (No model.)
T to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY ABBOTT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking-Pads for Type \Vriting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which--- Figure 1 is a perspective view from beneath of the parts of my inking-pad separate from each other. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same combined, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of said pad and its connecting mechanismas arranged for use in a typewriting machine.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the'figures.
Myinvention relates to a type-writing machine in which the printing is done by ink applied directly to the face of the type and is'intended for use in printing, in a different color from that used upon the type generally, a character or mark for distinguishing letters that are intended for capitals; and to this end my said invention consists in combining with a type-writing machine inking mechanism whereby inks having different colors may be simultaneously employed for printing, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the carrying of my invention into practice I employ an annular piece of felt .A for an ink-holder and place the same upon a correspondingly shaped metal plate B, that around its outer edge has a flange b, which projects upward around the edge of said felt. Over said felt there is now placed an annular plate c,which covers the entire upper surface of the same and preferably extends inward beyond its inner edge. The ink-pad A and its inclosing plates B and C are now placed within a recess d, that is formedin the top plate D or housing of the machine, and the whole locked in place therein by means of a metal ring E, which is provided with a peripheral exteriorly-threadecl flange c, and fits into the recess over said parts with its threaded periphery in engagement with the correspondingly-Lbreaded side of said recess. As thus arranged, the inking-pad A is inclosed and supported from above, while a considerable portion of its lower side is exposed'and is impinged upon by each of an annular row of type F and F as they return to their normal positions after having been moved inward and upward to the center for the purpose of printing their characters upon paper that is suitably supported above.
One of the type F is provided with a character that when printed in connection with the ordinary letters of the type operates arbitrarily to convert the same into a capital. Such distinguishing character may be printed around or at one side of the letter, or it may consist of an ornamental background for such letter 5 but under anycircumstances itbecomes much more effective if printed in a different color from that used upon the balance of the type. To permit of the use of a different color, the portion a of the pad A immediately over the distinguishing character is removed and within a threaded opening 0 in the plate 0 is fitted a threaded metal casing c, that is shaped like a cartridge-shell and within its lower open end contains a correspondingly-shaped piece of felt 0 that is saturated with ink having the desired color. The size and location of the supplemental pad (3 are such as to adapt it to receive the impingement of the special-character type F, by which means said type is always in condition to printits distinguishing mark in the predetermined color. The casing c entirely separates the main and supplemental inking -pads and enables entirely different kinds of ink to be employed without difficulty.
For the purpose of insuring the relative horizontal positions of the pads A and c and the plates B and O a stud or pin 0 projects from the plate B down through an opening a in said pad and through another opening I) in said plate B. Said pin is preferably arranged immediately outside of the supplemental padcasing c, as shown. The required vertical position of said supplemental pad 0 is secured by the rotation of its threaded cas ing or holder 0 within the threaded opening a, by which means each of said inking-pads is entirely independent and may be adjusted to its type without interference with the other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a typewriting machine, in combination with the independently movable types thereof, the inking devices consisting of an inking-pad adapted to supply ink to a portion of said types, and having an opening in which is placed another supplemental pad adapted to supply ink to the remainder of such types, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. I11 a type-writing machine, in combination with the independently-movable types thereof, the inking devices consisting of an annular pad adapted to supply ink to a portion of said types, and having an opening in which is placed an independent incased pad adapted to supply ink to the remainder of such types, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In an inking device for a type-writing machine, the combination of an inking-pad adapted to supply ink to a portion of the printing-types, a plate placed over said pad, and a second pad supported from said plate and adapted to supplyink to the remainder of such types, substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
4. In an inking device for type-writingmachines, the combination of an inking-pad adapted to supply ink to a portion of the printing-types, the casing for such pad, and a second pad adjustably supported by said easin g and adapted to supply ink to the remainder of such types, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In an inking device for type-writers, the combination of an inking-pad, the plates incasing it, and the incased supplemental pad supported by one of said plates, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In an inking device for type-writing machines, the combination of an annular inking-pad perforated at one point, the platesinclosing it upon its upper and lower sides, the supplemental pad arranged within such perforation, and the casing for the latter pad attached to said upper plate, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
7. In an inking device for type-writingmachines, the combination of an inking-pad, the plates incasing it, the supplemental pad, and the screw-threaded casing therefor engaging an opening in one of said plates, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. In an inking device for type-writing machines, the combination of an inking-pad having a section removed, a supplemental pad adapted to be placed in the space formed by the removal of said section, and means for effecting and preserving the registration of said supplemental pad with said space, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
0. In aninking device for type-writing machines, the combination of an inking-pad, the plates incasing it, the supplemental pad inserted in an opening in the former pad, and the pin for insuring the position of the latter in such opening, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of August, 1888.
HENRY ABBOTT.
