SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,989, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed October 10, 1890- Serial No. 367,654. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. MORRIS, of Seward, Seward county, Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in door-securing devices; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of its several parts, as will be fully specified hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My object is to provide a device very simple in construction, which, when applied to a door near its lower outer corner, as shown in Figure 1,will prevent any accidental closing of the same, as will be readily understood.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate this invention, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the door with my invention applied thereto in operative position. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same, showing the invention in its normal position, or position when the door is closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the same, showing the operation in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a face view of Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in all the figures, in whicl1- A represents a door having secured to its one side near the lower outer corner, by means of screws or rivets B, the spring-plate C, which is provided on either side and near its lower end with the inwardly-extending parallel ears I) D, provided with horizontal aligned perforations, in which the transverse rod E is loosely journaled, the ends of which rod, projecting beyond the outer side of the said ears D D, are bent round or inclose rigidly the side bars G G of a rectangular frame H a suitable distance beyond their middle point.
J ournaled loosely on the end'bars of the frame H are the transverse rollers I and J, provided with the suitable cushion material K, preferably of rubber. The device is secured to the door a suitable distance from the lower edge thereof to allow, when the device is in its normal or folded position, (shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4,) the opening and closing of the door without affording any obstruction thereto, as will be readily understood.
The operation of my invention is as follows: To secure the door in its opened position, as shown in Fig. 1, the person opening the door may with either his foot or hand force the roller I of the frame H, which is secured rigidly to the ends of the pivotal rod E, downward and outward, the lower end of the spring 0 giving outwardly as the roller J moves upward, until the said roller J is above the horizontal plane of the pivotal connection with the plate 0, when the spring, eX- tending its pressure inward, causes the rollers I and J, secured to the ends of the pivotal rod E, to move downward and upward, respectively, until, binding against the floor and doorin an inclined position, they are held firmly in that position by the inward pressure of the lower end of the spring-plate C. To cause the device to resume its normal or folded position the operator with either hand or toe of shoe raises the roller I from the door, the spring giving outward and the roller J, traveling downward at the same time. hen the roller J passes below the horizontal plane of the pivotal connection with the spring-plate C, the said plate, extending its pressure inward, causes the frame H, having the rollers I and J at opposite ends, to resume its folded position, as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a door with aspring plate 0 secured on its. lower out-er corner, and pivotally provided with a rectangular frame I-I, having rollers bearing against the floor and the door, substantially as described.
