Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM H. WILLIS, Oll FOREST CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT iN DOCH-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,70 l, dated June 22, 1875; appli ation tiled Mays, i875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM ]EI. WILLIS, of Forest City, county of Holt and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, ot' which the following is a specification My invention consists in the application of a friction'roller to two straight bars sliding the one upon the other, and to the devices for the attachment to the door and door-frame of a door-check, as will be hereinafter more fully set fort-h and definitely claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, vreferring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view ot' a door with my door-check applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of my door-check.
A represents a door-frame, and B the door, hung therein in any of the known and usual ways. At the top of the door B, at or near the outer edge, is fastened a plate, C, provided with an outwardprojecting ear, having a vert ical pin or stud, a, extending upward from the same. Ou the door-frame A, beyondthe line of the hinges, is secured another plate, D, having also an outwardly-projecting ear or arm, with a vertical pin or stud, I), extendingupward therefrom. E and Grepresent two straight bars, slidingone upon the other, they being con nected by means ot a loop, el, and stirrup I, as shown. In the stirrup I is placed a frame, c,
containing a rubber roller, 71 the journals of which project through vertical slots inthe sides I ofthe stirrup. The roller h is held down upon the upper bar by means of a set-screw, J, passing through the top of the stirrup I and bearing onthe frame e. By means of this setscrew the pressure of the roller is easily regulated. At the outer ends of the bars E Gr are formed or attached short vertical tubes t' t', which are placed over the pins or studs a b of the plates C and D, respectively.
When thus placed on the door and doorframe, it will readily be seen that the bars E G, with the pressure-roller h, form a complete door-check, preventing the slamming ot' the door or the blowing to of the same. rlhe door may be placed at any angle desired-thatis, more or less open-and will be held there by the check.
The device is simple, cheap,v durable, and not liable to get out ot' order.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a door-check, the combination of the bars E Gr, sliding one upon thc'other, and the pressure-roller h, arranged thereon by any suitable mechanism, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the sliding bars E G, st-irrup I, set-screw J, frame e, and rubber roller h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the sliding bars E Gr Vand their pressure-roller h, arranged thereon
