SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,769, dated December 16, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON F. DIOKEY, of

Friedens,in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a truss supported fenceof novel construction, substan- IO tially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a section of a wire fence embodying my invention; and Fig. 2, an opposite face view of one of'a series of warning or signal pick ets, as they maybe termed, used in the fence, with certain wires of the fence secured to it.

A A indicate the posts at the end of a span or section of fence, and B B the longitudinal stretchers or wires proper of the fence, fast-- ened at their ends to the posts, and intermediately of the posts to one, two, or more spacing-pickets O C. lntermediately again of these spacing-pickets and the posts are other and smaller, what may be termed o warning or signal, pickets D D, inasmuch as, in addition to the function which they fill of keeping the wires more effectually in position, they serve to give the fence prominence, so that it may more readily be seen and be avoided by stock. These smaller pickets may be made of steel or other suitable material. They and the spacing-pickets O C, which latter take in the full height of the fence-stay, are of V shape in transverse section and made with apertures 17 in their angling face to receive the fence-wires B B within them, which wires are afterward locked in position by nails or pins 0 c, inserted within the V-shaped concavities of the pickets in front of the fence-wires, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.

E is a wire truss extending from post to post and secured to the posts at or near their tops. Said truss serves to carry or support the main body of the fence intermediate of the posts by or through the interposition of the pickets G, to which the wires B of the fence proper are fastened. This is done by wires d d, connected with said pickets, if not directly, through an upper fence-wire B, locked, as described, with the pickets or connected direct with the truss-wire, and leading from the truss down and fastened to a fencewire B below it. Under such or like construction the fence maybe raised up to any desired height by drawing onthe ends of the truss-wire, and on the wire being fastened up the fence will remain in position, and a span of fence from ten to twenty rods or more in length may thus be held up, the spacing-pickets O, or certain of them, being anchored to the ground after the truss wire has been tightened up to keep the fence from swaying.

The invention is applicable to fences for different purposes, including both ordinary stock and poultry fences, grape and smallfruit lattices, the.

The leading feature of theinvention is the application of a truss to support the fence.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a fence, the combination of the posts A A, the wires B, the spacing-pickets C, the signal-pickets D, the truss-wire E, secured to the posts and extending downward at its center to about midway between the intermediate wires B of the panel, and wires (1 d, securing the truss-wire at its center to the two intermediate wires and to one of the intermediate wires between its central connection and the posts, substantially as herein shown and described.
