0. E. HICKS. TWINE CUTTER.
No. 442,254. Patented Dec. 9, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALEB E. HICKS, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS.
TWINE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,254, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed October 13, 1890. Serial No. 3671914. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALEB E. llICKs, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lwine-Cutters, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view illustrating my improved twine-cutter in use; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the cutter, enlarged, taken on the line 9000 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the cutter detached; and Fig. 4 aplan view of the body, the lid or guard being removed.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to a device attachable to the garments for use in cutting twine; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the cutter, which consists of a metallic plate, on one face of which an ordinary attaching pin 1) is hinged. The end of the body projects beyond the pin-hinge, and is narrowed and bent downward, forming a lip d. Formed centrally on said bodythere is a blade f, having a vertically-inclined cutting-edge. Alid or guard 13 is pivoted in ears or lugs g 011 said body. Said guard is adapted to cover the blade f. A spring 7L on the pivot, engaging the lid and body, tends to hold the long arm of the lid in engagement with said body. The short arm of the lid is extended down- In the use of my improvement the device is attached to the garment-s of the user in any convenient position by means of the pin b, as shown in Fig. l. The operation forces the twine under the toe k of the guard onto the blade f, which cuts it in amanner readily understood by all conversant with such matters without a more explicit description. The tension of the spring h on the guard tends to force the string against the body A and prevent it moving laterally between said guard and body, so that when drawn downward the inclined blade f cuts it cleanly.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. A twiuecutter comprising a body provided with an attaching-pin and cuttingblade, and a spring-tensioned guard hinged to said body and covering said blade, substantially as set forth.
2. In a twine-cutter, a body provided with an attaching-pin and a vertically-arranged blade having an inclined cutting-edge, in combination with a guard hinged to the body and inclosing said blade, substantially as decribed.
In a twine-outter, the body A, provided with an attaching-pin, as b. and the longitudinally-arranged blade f, in combination with the spring-tensioned guard B, having the beveled toe 7tand projection i, substantially as set forth.
at. In a twine-cutter, the body A, provided with the lip (Z, pin b, and blade f, in combination with the spring-pushed guard B, hinged to said body and having the toe k and elongation 2', arranged to operate substantially as described.
CALEB E. HICKS.
