WVILLIAM E. I-IATHAWAY, EDGAR F. HATHAWAY, AND ALONZO B. WVOOD- ARD, OF HORNELLSVILLE, NEW YORK; SAID XVOODARD ASSI GNOR TO SAID HATHAWAY AND HATHAWAY.
FENCING-STRAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,632, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed March 13, 1890. Serial No. 343,765. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E, HATHA- WAY, EDGAR F. HATHAWAY, and ALONZO B. WOODARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fencing- Strands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, strong, and durable fence-strand for the erection of ornamental and attractive wire fences 5 and to accomplish this object our invention consists, essentially, in a fencestrand composed of a zigzagged wire formed with alternating loops at its angles or bends and two longitudinal parallel wire strands, respectively connecting and interlocked with the angles or bends of the zigzaggcd wire between the opposite rows or lines of loops to leave the latter projecting from such parallel strands.
The invention is exhibited by the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective View showing a portion of the improved fencestrand.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawing, wherein- The numeral 1 indicates a wire, which is bent first one way and then the other into zigzagged form, and during the process of bending or fashioning this zigzagged wire it is formed into an oval or circular loop 2 at each angle or bend 3, thereby producing two parallel rows or lines of loops arranged, respectively, along the angles or bends of the zigzag, To produce the loops the wire is crossed, as at 3, at each angle or bend, and the loops in one row alternate with those in the opposite row. The angles and loops are all uniform, or substantially so, and between the two rows or lines of loops are arranged a pair of longitudinal parallel wire strands 4, each composed of two or more wires spirally twisted together. These strands 4 extend, re spectivelv, along the inner portions or bases of the loops at the angles 3,and the zigzagged wire passes between the two wires of each twisted strand, so as to connect and interlock the latter with the zigzagged wire and provide a row of loops extending laterally from each twisted strand in such manner that each of said strands ties together and braces and supports the several loops in one row.
The fence-strand described is useful for erecting ornamental wire fences that Will be strong and durable.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- A wire fencestrand consisting of a zigzagged Wire having alternating loops at its angles and apair of longitudinal parallel wire strands interlocked with the angles between the two rows of loops to leave the latter projecting from the strands, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
