Description

UNITED STATES` PATENT GFEICE.
LORENZO Elon, oFWE'sr vviNsTED, coNNEorifuiT.
- IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF TABLE-CUTLERY.
Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 44,056, dated August 30, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LORENZO RICE, of West Winsted, Litchfield county, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Mode'ot Making Table-Cutlery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had `to the accompanying-drawings, and to the` letters of reference markedthereon.
The nature -of my invention consists in at- Jcaching* the bolstersto a, table knife or fork, (the bolster being'ot'l any kind of-'mtalg temporarily, smthat the bolster'can .be heated with the blade or fork, and by a drop-die or other percnssiv'e pressure welded to the blade or to the fork, thus allowing the'zbladeof the Vknife or the fork to be cut from thin plates. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I williproceed to de scribe the-mode of attaching the 4holsters to the knife or fork. The'bolsters are formed with a pin or nip- Aple on the inner side, or the side to bevattached to the heel of the blade or `i'ork, with a. corresponding hole or slot in the blade or fork to receive it; o r the pin or nipple may be attached to only one half of the bolster, and long?,r enough to reach through` a slot in the blade or fork and enter a slot in the other half of the bolster. These two half-holsters when welded to the heel of the knife or fork ltoreoeive the pin or nipple in the corresponding halfbolster must be ofasha-pe and size that will rmly hold the pin or nipple when forced into it, preparatory to theprocess of welding, by a drop die or otherpercnssive pressure.
In -thefaccompanying drawings, A represents a. knife-blade with one slot for receiving the pin attached to one half part of bolster D. The pin in this bolster is put through the slot in blade A into the hole in the corresponding,r half ot bolster D, forced` together ready for the Welding process.
B represents a knifeblade with two holes or slots to receive the pins attachedto bolh ster C, which areforced into the heel 'of the blade, one on each side, ready fonwelding. G is a bolster in two half parts, .witha pin or nipple attached toe'ach halfpartj vThese pins are driven intol the holes or slots in the heel ot' blade B, one on each side, holding tle bolster to'its place, fready for welding. D is a bolsterin two half parts, with a pin or nipple attached to one half part and aslot vtoreceveit in the otherhalt' part.' The pin in'on'e halt' of bolster D is slipped through the slot in blade A and forced into the slot in its vcorresponding half, holdingr eachhalf of the- -bolster firmly to the heel 'of the blade or fork,
ready for welding. What lI-elainras my invcnlionf and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
The vmode or'method of'attaching the yb'olster to the knife or fork'tor the purposes herein set'fOrth, with a pin, nipple, o1: spur on one or both half parts of the bolster, and as herein set forth, holding them firmly during the process of heating and welding the-holsters to formone complete bolster.. The h'ole or slot the blade or fork, as'herein set -forth', or 'any-
