Description
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK E. BLAISDELL, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGN OR TO THE SIL-ORUSTA MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
INSULATING COMPOSITION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Extent No. 440,391, dated November 11, 1890. Application filed May 3, 1890. Serial No. 350,513. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. BLAIS- DELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and Improved Insulating Composition, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved compound or material for insulating devices, especially electrical machines and instruments-for instance, such as the contactpieces of switches for electric circuits-as well as in connection with electric cut-outs for lamps and other electrical appliances.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, durable, and efficient insulating compound, substance, or material which may be readily molded or otherwise formed into any desired shape or configuration for use.
My invention consists of an insulating composition for electrical and other purposes, as hereinafter fully described.
The body or interior portion of the insulating material, substance, or compound is composed of powdered asbestos and plastic clay thoroughly mixed in a dry state or condition and in the following proportions: seventy two parts of asbestus and eighteen parts of plastic clay, by weight, more or less. The dry mixture of asbestus and clay is then mixed with a suitable flux-for example, aflux containing six parts of powdered borax and four parts of, powdered feldspar, by weight, more or less. Of course instead of using this flux containing borax and feldspar in the proportions above described, other equivalent fluxes may be used; but good results have been obtained'in practice by using a flux containing feldspar and borax, and therefore preference is given to these materials.
Among the many advantages possessed by the above-described insulating compound or material the following may be particularly mentioned: low electrical conductivity due to the high percentage of asbestus contained therein and 'the cheapness or the cost of production thereof.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An insulating composition for electrical and other purposes, composed of asbestus, clay, and a flux, as feldspar and borax, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 1st day of May, A. D. 1890.
FRED E. BLAISDELL.
