Be it known that I, EDWARD E. PORTER, of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Press, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to 'the accompanying drawings, which form a ferent thicknesses.
The nature of my invention will be best understood as described in connection with the drawings, and the novel features which I desire to protect by this patent are hereinafter clearly set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved press, showing the package in place between the presser-plates thereof. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal elevation on the section-line x oc of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional elevation on the line yy y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional elevation on the line z e of Fig. 2.
A is what may be called the base-plate, on which the press is supported. A central groove a is formed in it to receive the pins of the removable bundle-plate, hereinafter described, and a larger central groove o3 is formed in its opposite end to receive the adjusting-screw D and the lug c of the stayplate C.
A is a plate bolted to the end of the baseplateA across the slot a3, and A2 an upwardlyprojecting plate on the opposite end, which serves the purpose of a clamping-plate. Grooves o o (see Fig. l) are formed in the sides of the plate A.
B B are bearings or plates acting as bearings. They are bolted by bolts bto sliding plates B', which are provided with projections b, iitting in the grooves a of the base-plate, and also with projections b4, serving a purpose hereinafter described.
To the top of the bearing-plates B are bolted stay-arms B2, which stays are also bolted to a sliding` back-stay C, adjusted to slide on the top of the base-plate A and provided with a down wardly-extending internally-threaded lug c, which projects into the grooves o3 of the base-plate. The sliding plates B are also bolted to the back-stay C, as by the bolts b5, tbc., so that the back-stay and the bearings B are rigidly and securely fastened together.
D is a screw fitting into the threaded perforation c of the back-stay and passing through a perforation at in the plate A', on each side of which it is provided with collars d and 032 to prevent longitudinal movement, and with a hand-wheel d, by which the screw can be turned.
F is a shaft j ournaled in the bearing-plates B B and having secured upon it a wrist-supporting device G, from which project the wristpinS .f1 o o .f/-
H I-I are links pivoted to the back-stays C and to the wrist-pins g g.
E is a movable presser-plate and its supports. As shown, the backwardly-extending arms of the plate-support are provided with grooves e c, fitting onto the projections b4 of plate B.
I I are links pivoted to pins e e on the movable presser-plate and to the wrist-pins g g.
M is a lever by which the wrist-supporting device G is turned.
J is a bundle-supporting plate, which is made so as to be readily removable from the press. It is provided with downwardly-proj ecting pins j', which t in the groove ct of the base-plate. The breadth of this plate is that of the bundle which is to be compressed between the presser-plates of the press, and at each end it is provided with abrupt cornersjj.
K indicates a package of paper bags upon which the press is operating, and L L selflocking presses between which the ends of the bundle are clamped, and which hold the bundle in the state of compression given to it by the press. These self-locking presses L L are made in accordance with the invention described in my patent granted April 16, 1889, and numbered 401,587, embodying also certain improvements on the said patented selflocking press for which I am about to iile another application for Letters Patent. The clamping-plates of the self-locking presses LL IOO are provided with lateral extensions Z Z, which extend below the sharp corners j 7" of the bundle-supporting plate J and prevent the self-locking presses from being shoved up against the ends of the bundle K, thus insuring that the bundle is in proper position,and when it is compressed that the self-locking presses holding its ends shall not interfere with the operation of wrapping it.
By turning the hand-Wheel d and the screw D, the back-stay C, bearing-plates B B, and all the movable parts lof the press proper are adjusted in a longitudinal direction,and thus adapted for use on packages of different thicknesses. The operation of pressing a bundle is performed simply by drawing down the lever M and turning the wrist-pin support G. The links H H. and I I act as 'a toggle-joint, pressing the movable presser-plate E forward with any desired degree of power.
Having now described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters len; S` l 1 In a press, the combination of the longitudinallyfadjustable bearings B B and longitndinally-adjustable back-stay C, firmly attached'to said bearings, mechanism for adjusting said parts, a shaft F, journaled in the bearings B B, a wrist-support G, attached to said shaft, wrist-pins g g g g, attached thereto, links H, pivoted to the back-stay C and Wrist-pins g, a sliding presser-plate E, links I I, pivoted to said plate and to the wristfpins gl', and a stationary coacting presser-plate A2, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a press, the combination, with the static nary presser-plate A2 and movable presserplate E, of a` removable package-holding plate J, with abrupt corners j j', arranged beneath the plate E.
3. In a press, the combination of the longitudinally-adj ustable bearings B B and longitudinally-adjustable back-stay C, firmly attached to said bearings, mechanism for adjust-ing said parts, a shaft F, journaled in the bearings B B, a wrist-support G, att-ached to said shaft, wrist-pins g g g g', attached thereto, links H, pivoted to the back-stay C and wrist-pins g, a sliding presser-plate E, links I I, pivoted to said plate and to the Wrist-pins g', a removable package-holding plate J, having abrupt corners j j and a stationary coactin g presser-plate A2, all substantally as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a press, a frame A, having grooves ce a', sliding plates B B having projections b engaged in grooves a', and projections b4 b4 on their upper edges, journal-bearings B B, secured to plates B B', a longitudinally-adjustable stay C, firmly secured to the bearings B, mechanism for adjusting said stay and its connected bearings B, a movable presser-plate and support E, having grooves @,engaged with projections b4, ashaft F, journaled in bearings B B, a wrist-support G, attached to said shaft, wrist-pins g g g g', attached to said wristsupport, links H Il, pivoted to stay C and to wrist-pins g, links I I, pivoted to plate E and pins g', and a stationary presser-plate A2.
