Description

(No Model.)
G. PETTER, Jr. DRUM No. 440,192. Patented Nov. 11, 1890.
HUI!
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PETTER, JR., OF PADUGAH, KEXTUCKY.
D R U M SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,192, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed December 19, 1889. Serial No. 334,317. (No model.)
To all wir/0m it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE PETTER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Paducali, in the county of McCracken and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Drum, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drums.
The object of' the present invention is to simplify and improve the means employed for bracing the heads of drums and enable the heads to be braced separately, and to be quickly removed and replaced by new ones when necessary.
rlhe invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularlypointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a drum provided with bracing means constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the hooks. Fig. 4. is a similar view of one of the stationary rollers that are secured to the cylinder of the drum.
Referring' to the drawings, l designates the cylinder, which constitutes the body of the drum and is constructed of any suitable niaterial, either wood or metal, and is provided at its top and bottom with hoops 2 and 3, that secure the head Ll and the reversed or snare head 5 to the ends of the cylinder l, and are engaged. by removable hooks 6, that are provided with openings 7, in which are arranged pulleys S, over which pass cords 9 and l0, that tighten t-he heads and regulate the tone of the drum. The head i and the reverse or snare head are constructed inthe usual manner, and are attached at their edges to wooden rings or bands ll and l2, that encompass the cylinder and slide upon it, and are secured in place by the hoops 2 and S. rlhe cylinder l is provided near its end with rows of stationary pulleys l3,that are arranged in pairs, and the rows are designed to be engaged, respectively, by the cords 9 and 10, that pass over the pulleys 8 of the hook 0.
Each of the cords 9 and lO'engages a set of hooks arranged upon one of the hoops, and passes over the pairs of pulleys that are arranged farther from the hooks and at the opposite end of the drum, whereby the heads of the drum are enabled to be braced independently, thereby insuring a much finer tone than would be the case were the head braced in the ordinary manner. Each cord is provided with a series of leather loops or sliders 13:1, which are arranged between the hooks and the opposite row of pulleys and embrace the cord and operate in the usual manner, the hooks being arranged opposite the intervals between the farther pairs of stationary pulleys, whereby when the leather loops 13* are moved toward the stationary p ulleys the cord will be drawn taut and thc head of the drum tightened.
From the foregoing description and the accoinpanying drawings it will readily be seen that the means employed for bracing the drunrhead are simple and inexpensive in construction, adapted to be readily applied to the ordinary forin of drum, enable the drumheads to be braced independently, and permit the drum-heads to be readily removed when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The combination, with the drum, of the rows of stationary pulleys arranged in pairs at the top and bottom of its cylinder, the hooks arranged upon the bracingdioops, and the cords 9 and l0,enaging the hooks and the opposite rows of pulleys, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the drum, of the rows of stationary pulleys arranged in pairs near the top and bottom of the cylinder, hooks engaging the bracing-hoops and provided with pulleys, and the cords 9 and l0, passing over the pulleys of the hooks and the opposite row of stationary pulleys, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the drum, of the stationary pulleys arranged in pairs near the top and bottom of the cylinder, the hooks engaging the bracing-hoops and arranged opposite the intervals between the pairs of pulleys at the other endof the drum, the cords 9 my own I have heretoaixed; my signature in and 10, passing over the pulleys of the hooks presence of two witnesses. and the pairs of pulleys at the opposite end of the drum, and the leather loops 13, adapted GEORGE PETTER, JR. 5 to tighten the cords, substantially as and for Witnesses:
the purpose described. J NO. A. MILLER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as M. J. SHEEHAN.
