- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW S. HART, OF MORRISVILLE, NFAV YORK.
HEATER FOR OMNIBUSES, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,874, dated. November 4, 1890. Application filed February 27, 1890. Serial No. 341,993- (No model.)
- T to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW S. HART, of Morrisville, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heaters for Omnibuses and Analogous Vehicles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. r
This invention relates to the class of omnibus-heaters in which a flue is extended lengthwise of the omnibus under the body thereof and communicates at one end with the fire-box and terminates with an exit-pipe at the opposite end.
The object of the invent-ion is to render the heater more efficient and safer in its operation; and to that end the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 a vertical longitudinal section of an omnibus-body equipped with my improved heater. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections, respectively, on lines 1 y and a: as of'Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the interior of the omnibus, taken below the plane 2 2, Fig. l, with a portion of the mat or open-work floor broken gway to illustrate the underlying heater and Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
B represents the body of the omnibus, the bottom of which is composed of longitudinal sills b b, extending along opposite sides of the said body and framed to cross-sills at opposite ends. Between said longitudinal sills b b is an opening a, extending nearly the en tire length of the bottom in the center of the width thereof. In said opening I place a metallic trough t, extending from the front end of the opening towardthe rear end thereof the greater portion of thelength of the opening. This trough I support in its position by outward flanges on the top of the sides thereof resting upon the top of the sills 17?), as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In the rear portion of the opening a,I place an air-chamber t', which is formed with outward flanges t t" at opposite sides of its top, by which flanges said air-chamber rests upon the top of the sills b b, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. IVithin the air-chamber I place the fire-box c, the top plate of which projects over the sides of the fire-box and rests upon the side flanges of the air-chamber. The bottom of the air-chamber is provided with ports t t' for the ingress of the air to be heated, and the aforesaid projecting portions of the fire-box are provided with perforations jj to allow the hot air to escape from the air-chamber to the interior of the omnibus. The tops of the firebox and airchamber are about on a level with the top of the trough t.
From the inner end of the fire-box c is extended a smoke-flue e horizontally lengthwise of the interior of the trough tand terminated with a smoke-exit pipe f at the opposite end or front end of the body B.
Over the top of the fire-box, air-chamber, and smoke-flue I place a perforated or openwork mat or floor h, which may be of any suitable material and constructed in any suitable and well-known manner, so as to cover the aforesaid devices without interfering with the circulation of the 'hot air in the interior of the omnibus.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the longitudinal sills b 1), extending along opposite sides of the bottom of the vehicle and having the opening a between them throughout their lengths, the metallic trough t, formed with longitudinal flanges along the top of its sides and seated by said flanges on the aforesaid sills and extending from the front end of said opening part way the length thereof, the air-chamber 01, formed with flanges d d on the top of its sides and seated thereby on the sills b b and provided with the ports 13 t' in its bottom, the fire-box 0, having its top plate projecting over the sides thereof and seated upon the side flanges of the air-chamber and provided with the perforationsj j, the flue e, extendin g from the fire-box lengthwise of the aforesaid trough and seated therein, the chimney f, extending from the opposite end of the said flue, and the open-work floor over the flue e and trough, substantially as described and shown.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 22d day of February, 1890.
