J. H. GARLSTEDT. BRIDLB.
No. 439,836,. Patented Nov. 4, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'JOHAN HJALMAR CARLSTEDT, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO CARL PETTER MALMQVIST, OF SAME PLACE.
.BRIDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,836, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed January 10,1890. Serial No. 336,536. (No model.) m it! To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHAN HJALMAR CARL- STEDT, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain Improvements in Bridles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an arrangement of the bridle of a horse so as to stop it quickly if it bolts or at other critical occasions.
In straps, which go from the snaffle-rings, a fiXed or movable metal holder is placed above each of the breathing-channels from the nostrils and each of these holders supports a roller. or other suitable body. From above the middle of the nose straps descend, which, being led across the rollers and down the sides of the nose, cross each other heneath the nether jaw, whence they are led up to the driver. When the driver wishes to stop the horse, he pulls the straps, when the rollers are pressed againstthe breathingchannels from the nostrils and the mouth is firmly closed, so that the horse loses all supb b to the roller-holders c 0.
ply of air.
The invention aims at depriving the horse of its power by completely shutting off the air, and thus causing it to stop when it bolts, or on other occasions when the driver cannot control the horse, so that unpleasantness and accidents may be prevented.
The accompanying drawings show in Figures I and 2, as an example, abridle with this arrangement seen from different sides. Fig. 3 shows a roller-holder on an enlarged scale.
a a are straps going from the snaffle-rings 'lhese rollerholders are each provided with a hole (1, above which the roller 6 is placed, held up by a spring f, fixed to the holder, so that the roller does not press the horses nose on ordinary occasions.
g g are the straps or thongs, which, proceeding from the middle of the nose of the horse, pass through the roller-holders c c and across the rollers e e. Afterward each part of the thong is led through the nearest snaffle-ring b and, crossing the other thong underneath the nether jaw of the horse, is led through a small block it, fastened to the other snafilering, and from there up to the driver.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a bridle, the combination, with the bit and snaffle-rings, of the straps a, rollerholders 0, therollers e, and theirraising-springs f, the blocks h, connected with the snafi'lerings, and the strap g, adapted to pass across the nose of an animal over the rollers e and in opposite directions through the snafiierings and blocks and he led to the driver, substantially as specified.
2. In a bridle, the combination, with the bit and snaffle-rings, of the straps a, the rollerholders 0, connected with such straps and having openings through them, the rollers e, and the springs f, connected at their respective ends to the rollers and their holders, and the strap g, adapted to pass across the nose of an animal over the rollers and through the snaffle rings or blocks in opposite directions below the horses mouth and be led to the driver, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
