Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFlCE.
JACOB MOWERY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA,ASSIGNOR TII'MSELF AND JAS. ll. SPENCER.
COAL-OIL LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,953, dated August 23, 1864 anted'ated .T11ne.16, 1863- 12) all whom it may' concern.- Be it known that I, J. ll/IOWERY, 0t Phila' delphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Goal Oil Lamps and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon. 3
p invention relates to an improvement, fully described hereinafter, in coal-oil lamps, made, first, fortliexpurpose of obtaining an extendcdattenuated flame, and one of increased brilliancy 1 secondly, for the preven tion of' smokewithout usingtheordinary glass chimney. 1
In order to enable others to makeand use my .inyention, I--will now proceed to describe -itsconstruction and operation.
1 On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, Figure l is a vertical section of my' im-proved coal oil lamp-burner; Fig. 2,21, plan view; Fig.
3, an inverted plan of the base of the burner,
and Fig 4 a sectional view of a detached portionot'the burner. I I
' Similarletters refer to similar parts throughoutthe several'views A is a metal casing, within the flaring upper end of which rests the detachable cap B,'the casing beingrso constructed at the lower end as to be readily attached by a screw or other wise to the reservoircontaining the coal-oil.
Two chambers are formed within the casing .n-n'amely, the upper chamber, D, and lower chamber, Ea-by a partition,,F, to which is secured the usual wick-tube, Gfand through.
the chamber;E passesthe usual "spindle, -d,
provided with pinions'eewhich, projecting through slotsin the wick-tube "and bearing against .the wick, serve to raise or,lower'the latter according to thedirection in which the spindle d is turned. The side of' the lower chamber is perforated with-holes, and an ori fice (see Fig. 3) at the bottom of the -proje c-- cool state which is so'desirable in allcoal-oil lamps. The dome; shaped capB has on the top the usual oblong opening, 13, and to the inside of the cap-are secured the lower endsof the curved plates Hand H, both.of which pass through the'oblong: slot, one bearing against oneend, the other against the other end, of the said-slot, and both plates being'bent outward, as se'enin FigJ, a p entiful supply of air enters :the chamber D through perforations b, and,
' passing vupward, impinges against the flame near the wick, jthe'reby consuming. a great por-.-
tion of the ,carbon. A smoke, however, of more orless density would stillaccompany the flame in spite ofthe supply otair introtroduoed into the chamber D,- but forthccurved plates H- and H, by means of which the flame, whichfw'ould otherwise be "thick and contracted in size, isattract'edand spread ontwardinianattenuated sheet ofth'e form represented in the drawings, thereby presenting an extended surface. exposed to. the air,
and, consequently, burning with increasedbrilliancy and unaccompanied by the usual smoke.
v l have found. by practical tests that the best shape for the curved plates is tha trepresented in the sect ional view, Fig. 4-namely,
concave on the inside and convex on the out side-and that the prevention. of smoke is "rendered more complete] and the brilliancy ot the flame increased bypcrforating the plates sotha't the air passing throughthese perfora-j tions and impinging against the edge of the flame has the tendency of so thoroughly con snmingthe carbonaceous matterwhich jaccompanies the same that there isno necessity for using the usual glass chimney.- -I claim as my inventionand desire to secure by Iietters Patent-- The cnrved'and'perforated plates and'H', v
arranged "on the dome. or its equivalent of a coal-oil lamp in-respect to the wick-tube, substantially as and for-"the purpose herein set forth;
In 'testim'ony'whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presenceotf two subscribing witnesses. Y
