SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,50*?, dated October 28, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL R. I-IINKLE, a citi- 'Zen of the United States, residing at Sullivan, 1n the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bill or Paper Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to bill or paper files; and it consists in providing one of the bars and the connecting-link with devices acting to lock and hold the bars in their extended or closed position against accidental displacement while the bills or papers are being connected or placed in position.

The invention further consists in providing suitable cavities in one of the bars, having a pivoted slotted cover, the said cavity being designed to receive the head of a paper-fastener and hold the fastener in a vertical position, whereby the same may be removed together with the bills or papers filed thereon.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of the improved le, showing a freight bill or bill of lading connected thereto. Fig. 2 is also a face View taken from the opposite side of Fig. 1, showing the links by which the bars are connect-ed. Fig. 3 is a face View, partly in section, showing the locking devices on the links and the springs mounted in the bar to engage the locking devices to hold the bar in its extended position or closed, and showing the elongated slot for the reception of the holding points or needles. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of one of the bars, showing the springs and slots, and also showing the links in section. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the device, showing the papers or bills connected. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the links for connecting the bars together, showing the lockinglug thereon, and also showing the spring for engaging the same. Fig. 7 is a transverse section of a modification, in which case the holders are composed of paper-fasteners set in recesses in the bar and in which a pivoted slotted locking device is employed to hold them in place. removable cover for holding the fastener in the bar. Fig. 9 represents a front elevation of a bundle of way-bills after being taken from the holder, and showing the fastener bent over and provided with a combined hook and washer for hanging purposes. Fig. 10 isa perspective of the combined washer and hook.

The bars A A are made in oblong form, with the lower one A being preferably provided with a broad face and of a narrowwidth, and to which bar is secured the holding points or needles a, which needles extend from the face of the bar, and when permanent are provided at their ends or points with eyes a', by which the same may be threaded for permitting the bills or papers to be tied when the holder has become full and it is desired to remove the papers or bills from the holder. The points or needles may be made removable, and adapted to remain in the bundle of bills when taken from the holder, and for this purpose I use the ordinary form of paperfastener, as shown in Figs. and 8, which is inserted in the recess CZ in the bar A. This recess is provided with a removable pivoted cover e, which when closed over the recess the slot will admit the arms of the fastener, but hold the head tightly inclosed. W'hen it is desired to remove the accumulated bills or sheets of paper from the holder, the cover c is turned on its pivot from over the recess d and the fasteners bent over and removed with the sheets, and by this means the operation of filing and binding the sheets is greatly simplilied.

The bar A', which composee the handle or clamping-bar, is preferably provided with a narrow operating or holding face and having any desired ornamental form given thereto, and the two bars A A are connected together by links B. The links B at one end are provided with a perforation or pin-hole l), by which said links are pivotally connected to the side or edge of the bar A, and at the other end are expanded in width and have formed upon or secured to theirI inner faces lugs D', having the inner face h made straight or flat, and which lugs fit within recesses C, formed in the side of the bar A, and the link and lug being provided with perforations or pin-holes C', through which a screw passes and engages the bar A to form the pivot for said link, and

also to hold the same connected to the bar. The inner or operating face of the bar A is provided with elongated recesses D for the reception of springs D', secured at one end and with the free end extending to and e11- gaging the lug b', the location and arrangement of parts being such that when the bars are fully extended the face of the spring will engage the straight face of the lug, and by such an engagement lock and hold said bars in their extended position against accidental displacement. The bar A" is also provided With elongated recesses E in such position as to receive the points or needles when the bars A andV A are forced together, the recesses E being made in elongated form to provide for the change in the relation of the link-connected bars as a greater or less amount of sheets is placed between them on the pins, Which causes a change in relation of the bars endwise relative to each other. The cover e, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, is pivoted at one end to the bar in the slot, having its upper face iush with the face of the bar and adapted to be swung back and forth Without becoming detached or lost.

What I claim isl. Ina bill or paper file, the bars connected together by links having pivotal connections with the bars, and devices, substantially as described, for automatically locking the bars and holding them in their open or extended position, as set forth.

3. In a bill or paper file, the bars pivotally connected by links, one bar being provided with recesses to receive the heads of paperfasteners, in combination with a slotted cover pivoted to the bar and adapted to engage and and hold the fasteners in the recesses, substantially as set forth.
