COUGH REM EDY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,955, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed February 19, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN SMITHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Cough -Lozenges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful medical compound to be used in the form of and all diseases of the throat and lungs.
My compound consists of the following ingredients, combined in about the proportions stated, viz: sugar, one cup; honey, one-half cup; cod -liver oil, two table-spoons; cornstarch, two table spoons; glucose, two tablespoons; taro, one dessert-spoon.
The manner in which I prepare this compound is as follows: The ingredients are thoroughly intermixed with suitable flavoring and stirred until it forms a paste, which is boiled and pulled in the manner of making certain kinds of candy, and finally molded in suitable forms or cut into the shape of tablets or lozenges. serve the purpose of holding the oil in the confectionery, for without the corn-starch and taro the oil would flow out as soon as the confectionery cooled.
In case of a cough a lozenge composed of the composition described is to be taken every hour until a cure is effected.
Having thus described my invention, what I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim The herein-described medical compound for coughs, colds, and throatand lung diseases generally, consisting of sugar, honey, codliver oil, corn-starch, glucose, and taro, with a suitable flavoring added, substantially in the proportions specified.
