L. B. OONANT. COMBINED PLOW POINT AND GOLTER.
No. 438,911. A Patented Oct. 21, 1890.

UNITED STATES LEONARD B. CONANT,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF THORP, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED PLOW-POINT AND COLTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,911, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed May 7, 1890- Serial No. 350,892. (No model.) I
To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD B. CONANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Thorp, in the county of Wextord and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Plow- Point and Oolter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined plow-point and colter, the object being to provide a simple, economical, and efficient device which is adjustable with respect to the landside of the plow, so as to compensate for any wear of the point. thereof.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and newcombinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the landside of a plowshare with my improved combined colter and point attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the combined colter and point detached.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the combined plow-point and colter, the numeral 2 denoting the point and 3 the colter. The front of the colter, which is beveled to form a cutting-edge 3, occupies an inclined position when secured to the share, while the point 2 at the lower end thereof projects forward a short distance beyond the colter and is widened or formed with a projecting portion 2. The rear lower portion of the colter is provided with a circular projecting lip 4 and has a recess 5, so that in connection with the rounded end of the landside 6 there is formed a circular joint, the lip 4 being embraced between the landside and the share 7, and pivotally secured thereto by -means of the pivot-pin 8. The upper part of the colter is provided with a downwardlyprojecting segmental arm 9, having an elongated slot 10, which registers with an aperture in the share, through which passes a bolt 13. This bolt carries at its outer end a washer 14 and a bindingnut 15, which is screwthreaded to engage with corresponding threads on the bolt. The washer 14 and the segmental arm may be provided with notches, teeth, or serrations corresponding and engaging with each other, so as to more securely hold the colter and point in any position to which they may be adjusted.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. As the point 2 wears away, by simply loosening the nut 15 the arm 9 may be elevated, turning the colter on its pivot S and depressing the point into proper position for effectively performing its work. The object of widening the point 2, or providing or forming it with the projection 2, is for the purpose of preventing the working of grass between the point and colter.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a plow, of a combined plow-point and colter pivoted to the landside thereof and provided with a downwardly-extending arm having an elongated slot, a bolt secured to the share and passing through said slot, and a binding-nut engaging with said bolt for holding the arm in position, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a plow, of a combined plow-point and colter pivoted to the landside thereof and provided with a downwardly-extending arm having an elongated slot, the point being provided with a project ing portion 2, a bolt secured to the share and passing through said slot, and a bindingnut engaging with said bolt for holding the arm in position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEONARD B. CONANT.
