SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,756, dated October 21, 1890.

To all whom it .mcty concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEPH F. SUFFECOOL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Box- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in shipping-cases.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for fastening the covers of shipping cases, crates, boxes, and the like, adapted to permit the cover to be readily placed upon the body of a receptacle or case and be securely and automatically locked.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crate constructed in accordance withthis invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the cleats.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the body of a crate, consisting of sides 2 and ends 3, the latter of which have extended transversely across their outer faces and near the upper edges of the body cleats 4., upon which rest end pieces 5 of a cover 6 when the latter is in its position upon the body. The cleats 4 are provided upon their upper faces with staples 7, that extend through the cleats and have their ends clinched upon the bottom of the same, and the said staples 7 project upward from the cleats and fit in slots 8 of the end pieces 5, and are engaged by spring-actuated bolts 9, having their inner ends beveled and adapted to automatically engage the staples when the cover 6 is fitted upon the body of the crate,

and it will be seen that the covers can be readily fitted upon the bodies of the crates and securely and automatically locked, and without the necessity of adjusting and manipulating the fastening devices, as is the case with the ordinary construction of crates. The bolt operates in a cylindrical bore 10, and is engaged by a spring 11, having its rear end bearing against a block 12, fitted in a recess 13. The bolts are provided with projections 14., arranged in recesses 15, and adapted to be readily engaged by the thumb or fingers to return the bolts and release the staples and enable the cover to be readily removed.

From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.

What I claim is- The combination of the body 1, provided with cleats 4, extending across the ends, the staples 7, projecting from the upper faces of the cleats and arranged transversely thereon, and passing through the same and having their ends clinched upon the under sides of said cleats, the cover provided with end pieces 5, adapted to rest upon the cleats and having transverse slots to receive the staples, and the spring-actuated bolts arranged longitudinally within said end pieces and adapted to cross the slots thereof and engage the staples and prevent the withdrawal of the same, said bolts having projections 14, arranged in recesses of the cleats 5, to be operated by the fingers, substantially as described.
