PlLLOW-SHAM HOLDER.

SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,000, dated October '7, 1890.

Application filed May 24, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JosHUA R. KIDDER, of Port Clinton, in the county of Ottawa and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillow-Sham Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in pillow-sham holders; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to provide a holder to which the pillow-sham can be attached, and by means of which it can be held in an open position, so as to be displayed to the best advantage.

Figure 1 is a perspective of the sham-holder in an open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts closed. Fig. 3 is 'a section showing the spring-catch.

A represents the standard, to which the head B is rigidly secured. Pivoted in opposite ends of this head are the two arms 0, which are adapted to be opened into a horizontal position and locked by means of a button D, which is pivoted in a recess in the head. When the button is turned into a line with the head, its ends catch over shoulders upon the inner ends of the arms, and when the button is turned at an angle to the head the arms are released, so that they can be closed in the position shown in Fig. 2. Attached to each of these arms by means of paste, glue, or cement are strips I of flexible material, to which the edges of the sham are to be pinned.

Attached to the standardAby means of the loops J, which extend over the top of the standard, is the extension L, which has a series of holes N formed through its lower end, and which extension may be covered upon its inner side with any suitable flexible material and have a ferrule 0 applied to its lower end to keep the end from splitting. Through one of the holes N is to be passed a screw into the Serial No. 353,083. (No model.)

bottom of the head-board. Passing through the standardA is a knob or catch P, which is placed between the two loops J, and which acts as a stop to the movement of the two parts A L upon each other. At night by catching hold of the catch P and pulling upward upon the standard A the shams are raised until the standard can move no farther, when it is caught by a spring a, which is placed between the two parts A L. During the day the standard, having the sham fastened to it, is lowered, and in this position the sham covers the pillow or bolster. At night the standard is raised, so as to lift the sham above the heads of the occupants of the bed, and hence the shamholder is never removed from the bedstead, and the shams are only removed when they are to be replaced by others.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a pillow-sham holder, the standard provided with a head at its upper end, pivoted arms connected to the head, having inwardlyextending shoulders, and a button placed over these shoulders for locking the arms in a raised position, the parts being combined and arranged to operate substantially as shown.

2. In a pillow-sham holder, the standard A, the head B secured thereto, the pivoted arms connected to the head and provided with strips of flexible material, to which the shams are to be pinned, and a button for locking the arms in position, combined and arranged to operate substantially as described.

3. In a pillow-sham holder, the verticallymoving standard provided with the head, the pivoted arms, and the button for locking the arms in position, combined with the exten sion L, the loops J, and the button, substantially as set forth.
