SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,849, dated October 7, 1890.

Be it known that I, ISAAC WATKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Mopping and Scrubbing Frame, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of my invention to construct an inexpensive and convenient holding frame for use in connection with floor scrubbing devices,-in the organization of which provision is made for the holding of a mop in position for service, and for wringing it dry, and also for the supporting of a brush to cooperate with the mop in cleaning the floor.

In the drawing I illustrate and herein I describe, a preferred form of a convenient embodiment of my invention, the particular subject matter claimed as novel being hereinafter definitely specified.

The drawing hereto attached, to which reference is to be made for the better understanding of my invention, consists of a View in perspective of the device, illustratingboth the brush and casters as in contact with the floor.

In the drawing, A is what I term the base piece of the frame, the same being conveniently a structure consisting of two bars a, rigidly connected by a cross bar a to which base piece is secured a handle bar B, of such length that its upper end can be grasped by the person using the frame, and by which the entire frame is operated. To the bars a of the base piece is secured a brush L of the character Which it is desired to employ. In the drawing I illustrate the application to said bars of an ordinary domestic scrubbing brush,-which is shown as secured by a pair of clamps C O of an ordinary type, which are pivoted directly to the extremities of said bars, the under surfaces of which latter are rounded off as shown to permit of a slight rocking movement of the brush with reference to said bars. Each clamp embodies a brush receiving recess c,andis provided with a thumb screw, c ,in position to engage with a brush placed within said recess.

D is the head piece of the frame, being conveniently a wooden block, which is supported a convenient distance above said base block, the supporting devices consisting of the handle B to which said head piece is secured or upon which it is mounted by means of an aperture d through which said handle passes, and which handle therefore becomes itself a part of the frame, and of a pair of braces E E the respective extremities of which are respectively secured to the head piece and base piece.

F is a mop keeper secured to the base piece at the lower ends of the braces.

G is a spindle, being a rod passed vertically through and free to slide with reference to an aperture d in the head piece D between the upper extremities of the braces, the upper end of which spindle is equipped with a crank G and the lower end of which is equipped with a mop holder H. The mopholder is conveniently formed of a pair of blocks secured together by thumb-screws 71 so as to be easily separated, and the upper one of which blocks is directly attached to the spindle.

I is a mop secured respectively to the keeper F and to said mop holder II.

To support the spindle and retain it against wabbling I prefer to provide it with a guide, a convenient formbeing that shown, which consists of a guide block J mounted upon said spindle and having its ends, or tenonsj formed on its ends, entered in vertical mortises or channels 6 formed in the opposing faces of the braces.

k are a pair of casters attached to the under face of the base block at each side of the keeper F.

The operation of the contrivance will be readily understood; when it is desired to use both mop and brush at the same time upon the floor, the frame is held in the position shown in the drawing, and the mop, by means of the spindle is let down upon the floor. When it is desired to have either the mop alone or the brush alone operate upon the floor the frame is tilted so that while one will remain on the floor the other will be elevated therefrom. The mop which, when the spindle is moved down, is bunched together at thelower ends of the braces and about the keeper F, may be wrung by drawing upward said spindle and rotating its handle.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination, the base block, thehandle, the head block, the braces, the spindle, the mop keeper, the mop holder mounted on the spindle, and the brush holding devices, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination, a base block, a handle secured thereto, means for securing a brush to said block, a mopkeeper secured to said block, casters arranged one on each side of said keeper, a mop holding and twisting spindle capable of being moved up and down so as to either draw a mop taut or place its body close to said keeper, and a frame in which said spindle is supported,the arrangement being such that when the mop is down and the frame is tilted to place it upon the floor the frame itself is by the casters kept
