CORN-PLANTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,782, dated August 9, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIOH Loos, of Denver, Colorado Territory, have invented an Improved Corn-Planter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists ofcertain mechanism, fully described hereinafter, for depositing kernels of corn in furrows at uniform intervals and in given quantities.
In order toenable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of thisspecification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved cornplanter. Fig. 2 -is a transverse vertical section; Fig. 3, a rear view of the planter;v and Fig. 4, an inverted plan view.

A represents the frame-work of the planter, the frontcnd of this frame being provided with suitable appliances, by meansot which the machine is drawn over the ground. A box or casing, B, is secured to the frame, and this box is surmounted with a hopper, O, for receiving the corn, and 'is provided below with a tube, 1), through which the kernels of corn are discharged into the furrows. The interior of the box B contains a packing, b, in which is a 'circular chamber for the reception of the hollow cylinder E, the latter being secured to the axle F, which passes'through the box, and which turns in suitable bearings, a a, secured to the frame-work of the machine. parts through- G, secured to one end of the axle, serves to support one side of the frame, while the other side is supported by a wheel, H, turning in a hanger, I. A recess or pocket, e, is formed in the cylinder E, and in this recess fits a piston, f, attached to a spindle, h, which is guided by a projection, 71, in the cylinder, the spindle be ing surrounded with a spring which tends to maintain the piston at the end of the recess. A projectiomj, is secured to the capm of the box B, this projection being inclined, as seen in Fig. 1, for a purpose described hereinafter.

In frontof'the box B, and to the frame, is secured the plow pointed instrument L, which serves to open the furrows, and at the rear of the box another instrument, M, is sccured to the frame, this instrument being of such a form that it will close the furrows as the machine passes over the ground. To the rear of the frameare also secured the two handles N, bymeans of which the machineis guided.
As the machine is drawn over the ground the cylinder E will turn in the direction of the arrow, and when the recess 6 coincides with the hole in the hopper, and thus in the slide K, it will receive the quantity of corn decided upon by the adjustmeutof the said slide. .As the cylinder continues to revolve the corn will retain its place in the recess e, owing to the presence of the packing I), until the recess coincides with the tube 1). pro-aches this point the end of the spindle It comes in contact with the inclined projection j, which forces the piston outward and causes the corn to be projected into the tube 1), through which it falls into the furrow. As the machine is moved over the ground therefore a quantity of corn is received into the recess 0 and discharged from the same at intervals, the distance apart of the points where the corn is thusdischarged into the furrows depending upon the circumferencc of the driving-wheel G.
