Description

(No Model.)
0. KIMPLEN. PRINTERS GOMPOSING STICK.
No. 436,981. Patented Sept. 23, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS KIMPLEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PRINTERS, COMPOSlNG-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,981, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed August 1, 1888. Serial No. 281,692. (No modeli) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS KIMPLEN, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printers Composing-Sticks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section at line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to that class of printers composing-sticks which have an adj ustable end or bracket by'which the length of the line of type may be varied as desired.
Various devices have been heretofore used to clamp the adj ustable end or bracket in the desired position; but many of these devices have been found defective, as the wedging in of the type tends to force the adjustable end or bracket out of position, or to spring its outer end out of a line at right angles with the side of the stick, causing the lines of type to be of different lengths, which renders it difficult to lock the forms in the press.
The object of this invention is to improve the means for clamping the adjustable end or bracket to the side of the frame of the stick at any desired point, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new Will be pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the composing-stick having an end walla and a side wall I). This side wall I) has a dovetailed groove 0 in its interior face.
B is the adjustable end or bracket, which has a dovetailed guide d, which slides in the dovetailed groove 0 in the side wall I).
O is a thumb-screw.
D is a wedge-shaped block having a boss 6 to receive the screw threaded end of the thumb-screw O. This block D fits into a recess in the guide d:
In use, the compositor holds the composingstick in his left hand, as usual. The adjustable end or bracket B can be set at any de sired distance from the fixed end 00 by.loosening the thumb-screw C and moving it to the desired point, the guide at sliding in the slot 0. By tightening the thumb screw 0 the wedge-shaped block D is drawn against the walls of the dovetailed groove 0, and the bracket B is drawn against the side wall I), which firmly clamps the bracket at that point. The tightening of the screw 0 draws the face f of the bracket B in a line parallel with the face a of the frame A, without any tendency to move the bracket longitudinally, and, as the bracket is clamped firmly against the side wall I), it is so held that the wedging in of the type will not spring its outer end back, but it will be held at right angles to the side wall I), as is required.
The bracket B is preferably made hollow, as shown in Fig. 2, to lessen the Weight of the composing-stick. It will also be seen that the clamp is entirely Within the frame of the stick, so that there is no projecting part on the outside of the frame which would interfere with the grasp of the operator.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t The herein-described composing-stick, consistin g of the frame A, having the dovetailed groove 0 in the side wall I), the adjustable bracket B, having the dovetailed guide d, which fits into the groove 0, the wedge-shaped block D, fitted into a recess in the guide d, and the thumb-screw C, engaged with said block, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
, CORNELIUS KIMPLEN.
