SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,304, dated September 9, 1890. Application filed June 9, 1890. Serial No. 354.759. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ESSE A. CRANDALL, of Brooklyn, in the'county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure l is a view of a baby-carriage embodying my invention, the parts being arranged to form an ordinary-looking childs carriage. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the bodylengt-hened. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts adjusted as a two-seat carriage. Fig. 4 shows the parts adjusted so that one child can lie at full length and another be seated without inconvenience. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the adjustable parts.
This invention is an improvement in childrens carriages; and its object is to improve the construction of the bodies thereof by providing an adjustable portion which can be adapted as an extension of the body itself or asa seat and can be arranged in Various positions and transform the carriage intoasingle or double carriage and shifting-seat carriage; and to this end it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter clearly describel and claimed.
Referring to the drawin s by letter, A represents the body of the carriage of ordinary construction, excepting that its front end is open, and this body is mounted upon any suitable running-gear in the usual manner. The body is preferably made of wicker-work, or with unpadded sides at front at least.
B designates a seat-frame having a bottom B, corresponding in length to the width of the body between the sides a a at front there of, a back I), and sides b, and may be made entirely of wicker-work. The seat B fits exaetly within the ends of sides a a and rests upon the bottom A of the body, and when the seat is turned, as shown in Fig. 1,its back I) constitutes the front end piece of the carriage-body.
O designates a rectangular piece or frame of wicker-Work corresponding in size to the bottom of seat B and attached by one side edge to the front edge of the seat by means of hinges c o, as shown.
D is another piece similar to C and secured to the front edge of piece 0 by hinges d d, as shown, the hinges being so placed that piece 0 could be turned backward under seat I) and piece D turned forward under piece C. When the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, pieces 0 D may be folded beneath the seator laid out horizontally upon the bottom A of the body, as may be convenient. When thus arranged, the carriage looks like an ordinary-sized baby-carriage. For alarge child, or when it is desired to lengthen the body to let the child recline at length, seat B is drawn outward, as indicated in Fig. 2. Its sides and bottom then constitute extensions of the sides and bottom of body A, and the seat is secured in this position by the strap or straps E,which fasten sides I) to sides a, and also by the pieces 0 D resting on bottom A. WVhen it is desired to carry two children sitting, the seat is shifted to the position shown in Fig. 3. It is there reversed and its back 1) sets in between sides a, while pieces 0 D hang over the end of bottom A, piece 0 being nearly vertical; but piece D is upheld in an inclined position as a foot-rest by means of straps F F, attached to its ends and to the ends of piece 0, as indicated, seat B being kept in position by straps E, as shown. If it is desired to carry an invalid child or one child reclining and one sitting, the parts can be shifted as in Fig. 4. Seat B is lifted out of body A and is supported upon the sides a a and at the front end of the body by means of short loops G G, four being used, two on each side. These loops are secured by one end to the end of bottom b, and their free outer ends are caught or buttoned on studs or headed screws H H, secured to the top edge of sides a a, as shown. The piece 0 drops in front and closes the open front end of bodyA,while piece D is adjusted for a foot-rest, as before described. The parts can be quickly and neatly adjusted and secured in the various positions described, and are compact, light and durable, and economical, as the carriage can be turned from a single into a perfect double carriage in a few minutes to carryone or more children and at the same time keep them apart, if desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is i 1. The combination, with a childs-carriage body having an open front end, of an adjustable seat having a bottom, back, and sides, and adapted to close the end of the body and to form an extension thereof, substantially as described.
2. The combination,with a childs-carriage body having an open front end,of an adjustable seat having a bottom and back, and the folding pieces connected to each other and one to the seat-bottom, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination,with a childs carriage body having studs on its sides, of a seat having loops attached to its bottom adapted to be buttoned on said studs to suspend the seat, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the body open at its front end with a seat having abottom,aback, and sides, substantially as described, the folding pieces 0 D, and the securing-straps, all substantially as described.
5. The herein-described childs carriage, consisting of a body open at its front end and having studs H on its sides, with the adjustable seat B, having loops G, and the hinged pieces 0 and D and the straps, all substantially as specified.
