:lmfifovement in Childrens Carriages.
Patented Sep. 19,1873.

UNITED STATES HERMAN V LUTZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS CARRIAGES- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,162, dated September 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN LUTZ,'0f the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Carriages; and I do hereby declare the followin g to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing-- 7 Figure 1 represents a longitudinal Vertical section of this invention when the carriage is ex- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same when folded up for transportation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the seat.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to a childs carriage, the back-rest, the seat, and thefootrest of which are connected by hinge-joints, while the wheels are mounted on removable slides, and the pushhandle is inserted in a socket in the back edge of the seat in such a manner that when the carriage is to be transported from one place to another the handle and the wheels can be taken off and the body of the carriage can be folded up in a small package that can be easily carried from one place to another, and when the carriage is extended and rigged up for use the push-handle forms the supportfor the back-rest and footrest, keeping these parts in the properposition in relation to the seat.
In the drawing, A designates the seat of my carriage, which connects, by means of binge joints a, with the foot-rest B, and by hinge-j oints b with the back-rest G. The back rest is provided with a hinged head-rest, D, and with rigid cheek pieces 0, while the foot-rest is provided with cheek pieces d, and from these cheek pieces extend jointed bars e and straps f to the cheek pieces of the back-rest. 1n the sides of the seat are two dovetailed sockets, 9, (see Fig. 3,) to receive slides h, which form the bearings for the Wheels E, and in the back edge of the seat is a socket, i, to receive the bottom end of the pushhandle F. This handle is, by preference, made in sections, which cantbe connected by tubular sleeves or sockets, so that the same can bereadily disconnected and put into the folded carriage, as will be presently explained.
When the carriage is extended, as shown in Fig. 1, the push-handle passes through a loop, j, formed by the continuation of the straps f, and also through a loop, k, which is secured to the outside of the head-rest l), and by these means the handle serves to retain the foot-rest and also the back and headrests in the proper relation toward each other and toward the scat. If the handle is drawn out the foot-rest sinks down and the back and head-rests are tipped over the seat. The handle might, however, be connected to the back-rest by catches or other means, and in this case the loop j could be dispensed with. To the outside of the foot-rest is secured aloop, l, which corresponds to the loop k on the head-rest.
When the carriage is to be carried from one place to another it is folded up to the position shown in Fig. 2, the wheels and the sections of the handle being placed inside thereof, and in this case the loops is and 1 form the handle for carrying the whole device. When thus folded, my carriage cannot only be carried up and down narrow stairs without difficulty, but it can also be stowed away in any carriage or in a railroad car and carried to parks,pic-nics, or other places of amusement or recreation, and then unfolded ready for use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A folding carriage, constructed substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the handle E with thely as described.
