Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES CHASE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,361, dated January 23, 184.6.
To all whomy t may concern Be it known that I, Mosns CHASE, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Fulling, Scouring, and' Washing Clothes, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure 1,.'is a front View. Fig. 2, is a vertical section on the line A, B, of Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section of one half of the machine. Fig. 4L, is a side view of one half of the machine. Fig. 5, is an isometrical perspective view of the machine.
The front A and back Bof this machine are made of 2 cast iron plates forming 4 legs and strengthened by suitable ribs and iianges, and made to hold and confine the sides c of the tub which are made of wood of a curved shape said cast iron plates being securely held together by l horizontal parallel screw rods and nuts D. The top is made of wood and divided into 4 sections two of which (E) are stationary and two (F) movable the two that are movable are hinged to the other two by common butt hinges and are beveled on the inner ends so as to fit close against the central part of the box and serve as lids for closing the openings through which the clothes are introduced. A horizontal transverse vibrating shaft Gr is placed in suitable boxes in the front and rear cast iron plates of the machine. Two parallel levers l-l are fixed to the outer ends of this shaft outside the box for vibrating it. The shaft passes through the centers of the boxes and levers. The levers extend beyond the hides of the box and are connected by two parallel rounds I I in the manner of the levers of a common fire engine for vibrat-ing the axles. Cast iron arms K Figs. 2 and 3 project down from this axle to which is fastened a central follower M of the usual form andconstruction for pressing the articles to be cleansed against the sides of the box. The upper. sections N of the sides of the box are made movable, and are connected with the central follower M for turning the clothes called counter pressers. They vibrate on axles Oat the bottom or lower edges thereof inserted into the cast iron plates or frame. They are connected together by afcentral plate l? extending from one to the other across the middle of the box, fastened by bolts or other suitable means, so that when the upper portion of one of these counter-pressers moves toward the center of the box the other moves from it and soy vice versa. The connection of them with the central vibrating follower is effected by means of shortbolts passed through the arms and into notches or depressions made in the middle of the connecting plate P said bolt coming in contact with the plate as the follower is vibrated alternately on either side and thus causing the counter pressers N to vibrate alternately to the right and left as the central follower M is vibrated by which the clothes are alternately pressed obliquely upward against the concave surface of the counter pressers and turners-the clothes turning over as the central follower moves in an opposite direction v followed by the counter presser attached to it. These movements are effected by vibrating the levers H in the manner of the fire engine. This combined action of the central with the counter pressers N keeps the clothes under an alternate pressing and counter pressing operation on either side and at the same time turning the clothes over at each alternate movement, thereby cleansing them without injury. Steam is also introduced through the opening .in the back of the machine. The dirty water when the operation is completed, is drawn off through the aperture R in front of the bottom- Hot water and soap may be put into the machine with the clothes and be confined by the lids which are made to fit steam tight.
What I claim as my invention and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the vibrating backs N and plates P with the central dasher M and axle G and parallel arms H and rounds I for operating the same-the whole being arranged and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
WM. P. ELLIOT, A. E. H. JOHNSON.
