W. LEIFER..
MAIL BAG.
No. 435,362.v
Patented Aug. 26, V1890.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES Y PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM LEIFER, OF YORK, PENNSY ELMER E. FREY,
LVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OF SAME PLACE.
MAIL- BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,362, 1a/@ea August 26, Iseo.
Application filed May 12, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEIFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Pouches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it Ic appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and shows one side of the mail-bag, the top portion being shown. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing-the other side, the bag being open. Fig. 3 is avertical section taken in theline of one of the staples.
2o This invention relates to certain improvements in inail-pouches; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will appear hereinafter.
serial No. 351,469. (No man.)
vided with leaf-sections b2, hinged at their 'normally7 top or upper edges to the top or upper ledges of said plate-sections, and in practice have their meeting edges or ends raised for greater freedom of movement when exed or moved into alignment. These leaf-sections are provided with fixed staples or keepers c, passing through coincident openings or slots d in both sides of the poucl1,and through registering openings or slots d in the plate-sections b b and protruding or projecting therethrough.
C is a label-carrying bolt, having one end while its other end has a slot e, through which passes the other staple or keeper c, a suitable padlock, preferably a spring-padlock, being then, as usual, applied to said latter staple or keeper to secure the bolt in place.
V A leather handle or loop f is secured to the pouch A about midway betweenits side edges and near the clasp B, to provide for the suspension of the pouch in place when being In the drawings, the letter A designates the pouch proper, of the usual form, the upper portion only being shown.
B refers to a sectional clasp, which consists of plate-sections b b', riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the pouch A, two b to the 3o outside thereof and two b to its inside, the same rivets or fastenings also securing both the outer and inner plate-sections together. The plate-sections b b', both the outer and inner ones, are hinged together end to end 3 5 about at the middle of one side of the pouch A, and therefore permit the outward iexing of the same at the upper end, and its retention thus flexed when suspended in position or in the rack, and simultaneously the out- 4o ward exing or bulging of the opposite side of the pouch by the hand. Thus the pouch, when in a suspended position, is held open by means of said clasp, and when removed from such position it is quickly closed by the alignment ofthe plate-sections, the move- Inent of the latter, when thus manipulated, drawing upon the pouch from its side edges.
filled, while at one side of said handle or loop is a screw-ring g for the convenient transference of the pouch to its destination after and before lling.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The mail-pouch provided at its upper edge, at one side, with a clasp consisting of double platesections arranged upon the inside and the outside of the pouch and riveted together and to the latter, said double plate-sections being hinged end to end together at about the middle of the side of the pouch, and having hinged to their upper longitudinal edges leaf-sections provided with keepers or staples adapted to engage coincident openings or slots in the said plate-sections and the pouch, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix Iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM LEIFER.
