WOODLEY WILLIAMSON CAMPBELL, OF BUSTI, NEW YORK.
IN KSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,278, dated August'26, 1890.
Application filed March 31, 1890. Serial No. 346,074. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WOODLEY WILLIAM- SON CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, A
and a resident of Busti, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a vertical section. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are details. Fig. 5 is a modication. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show modications.
This invention relates to inkstands; and it consists of the novelpconstruotion and combination of parts, as will appear from the following description and accompanying illustration.
In the drawings, A refers to the well of the inkstand, which is provided with a lateral extension or nose B at the bottom, oommunicating therewith through a contracted passage a. The ink-well A may have in its bottom an air-tight closed lling-opening.
C is a cupwhich is screwed upon the upper edge of the nose or extension B, and Bf is a funnel within the said cup. The cup C has at its upper edge an outwardly and upwardly flared rim or flange h, the purpose of which is to receive and return anyink that may pass up between the cup and funnel to the nose or extension below.- The flange or rimb may be inclosed by a suitable cover, if desired. The funnel B has an outer cylindric portion or wall which iits the cupA C snugly, and is provided with abottom c, which has a ange c', fitting or abutting air-tight against an annular or continuous shoulder c2 upon the bottom edge of the cup C. In this manner an air-tight stopper is provided for the nose or extension B. The funnel B has its lower tapering end arranged at the lower inner edge of the cup C, adapted to receive a minimum quantity of ink as the funnel is depressed by the application of downward pressure to it, as presently seen. The fun- `nel B has applied around its upper cylindric portion or wall a spring D, which is conneoted to said funnel 'and the upper edge of the cup O, whereby the funnel, when relieved of downward `pressure after its depression, is caused to automatically return to its normal elevated position. It will therefore be observed that as the pen is passed into the funnel, as practiced in supplying it with ink, it is brought into contact with the funnel, and the pressure thus exerted upon the funnel will depress the latter, submerging its lower endinto the ink in the ink-well extension or nose-B. rlhus the ink will flow into said end of the funnel and supply the penpoint with ink, immediately after which the pen of course is withdrawn, removing the pressure and allowing the closing of the lower open end oi' the funnel, and consequently preventing evaporation of the ink, as would otherwise occur. As the pen is removed from the funnel B ,the entering air will bubble past the ink in the neck or passage between the nose or extension B and the inkwell, and thus replenish the supply of ink in said extension to the extent of its displacement by the dipping of the pen thereinto.
In Fig. 5 are shown modifications as to certain minor details of construction as relates more particularly to the cup O and the funnel B and the application of the spring D; also, in Figs. G, 7, and 8 are shown modifications of my invention, the funnel B being' pivoted or hinged at its lower outer edge, permitting it to tilt inward and downward at its lower inner edge, as indicated in dotted lines, togain access to the ink.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The inkstand having the funnel, the lower end of which is held by a spring closed 'against the containing-cup secured upon an IGO In testimony whereof I alx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
