Description
(No Model.)
S. W. EVANS, Jr. FERRULE FOR OANES, UMBRELLAS, &c.
No. 435,215. Patented Aug. 26,1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL W. EVANS, J R., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FERRU LE FOR CAN ES, U M BRELLAS, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,215, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed January 6, 1890. Serial No. 335,951. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. EVANS, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fer-rules for Canes, Umbrellas, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a ferrule having a tip which is connected with the same in a secure and reliable manner, as will be hereinafter set forth and definitely claimed.
Figures 1 and 2 representlongitudinal sections of a ferrule embodying my invention, the same showing different steps in the manufacture.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a ferrule, and B designates the point thereof, which latter is conical, and especially so in its head. The ferrule is constructed of sheet metal, preferably of the form of a conical shell, the narrow end whereof is set back, forming the re-entering wall C and crimped edge D, the center of said wall being perforated, as at E. The point is inserted into the ferrule within the edge D and against the wall C, and the said wall is then bent by a suit- 0 able tool or implement, so as to form the flange E, which embraces the inner side of the head of the point, thus clamping said head between said flange and the crimped edge of the ferrule. By this provision the point is securely 5 connected with the ferrule and firmly sustained thereon while in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A ferrule provided with a flange and a point having the inner side of the head thereof embraced by said flange to clamp said point to the ferrule, substantially as described.
' 2. A ferrule having a crimped edge and a 45 flange within said edge for securing a point to the ferrule, substantially as described.
S. W. EVANS, JR. \Vitnesses:
JOHN A. WIEDERSI-IEIM, A. P. JENNINGS.
