LOCK BOLT.
Patented Aug. 19, 1890.
gaiwi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. RUSSELL, JR, OF NEWV BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
LOCK-BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,470, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed July 7, 1890. Serial No. 357,992. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY E. RUssELL, Jr., a citizen of the United. States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Bolts, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in lookbolts; and the object of my improveno ment is simplicity and cheapness of construction, whereby a light and substantial lookbolt is produced from sheet metal.
In theaccompa nying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lower part of a COUL- "15, bined latch and lock-case with looking mechanism having my lock-bolt applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, show- .ing -the face-plate and end of the lock-bolt. f Fig. 3 is afldetaohedfront elevation of my z olook-bolt. Fig. hillustrates the. same with thehead end in blank form, and Fig. 5 is an end view of my lock-bolt. v A designates the lock-bolt, and-B the faceplate, of the combined latch and lock-case C. 'z5.The shank or body 6 of the lock-bolt is of the ordinary form, and so, also, are the other parts, with the exception of the head end of f the lock-bolt and the mortises therefor in the face-plate.
Tlre head end of my lock-bolt consists of a. series of sheet-metal bars 7, extending 1ongi= tudinally with the bolt, and in 'the finished I to rear, as shown.
bolt having their width extended-from front The mortises in the faceplate B consist of a like number of slots, to which the several bars 7 are fitted. I form this head end from a fiat sheet-metal blank, substantially such as is shown at the lefthand end of Fig. 4, thesame being slit longitudinally on the lines 8 8 8 to divide the same into the desired number of bars. These bars are then'so twisted that their broad sides extend from front to rear, as shown in the other figures, thereby forming a bolt-head of sufficient strength and bulk, and one which may be used with a keeper having the ordinary form of mortise.
While I have shown and described my improvement as embodied in a lock-bolt only; it is evident that the same construction may be applied to analogous boltsas, for instance, a mortise door-bolt and the like.
I claim as my invention The herein-described sheet-metal bolt, consisting of a body or shank 6 and a head composed of longitudinal sheet-metal bars 7, with their broad sides extending from front to rear, substantially as describech'and for the purpose specified.
