UNITED STATES JOHN W. MCCOOL,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF EDDYVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE' TO COLUMBUS WILSON, O F SAME PLAOE.
FNcE-Posr.
SPEGIFICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,454, dated August le, 1890.
o Application filed December 30, 1889. Serial No. 335,335. (No model.)
fence-posts.
The object of the present invention is to provide a fence-post of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be readily inserted in the ground without requiring a previously-prepared hole, and which when once planted will be capable of Wit-hstanding the strain incident to its use, and will not lean or become cauted.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence-post constructed in accordvation.
ance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side ele- Fig. 3is a horizontal sectional view on line'x x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the band to show how the braces are arranged.
Referrin g to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a fencepost construoted of flat. metal and having its upper portion, which is designed to be arranged above the ground, provided with integral longitudinal flanges 2, that are parallel and upon the same side of the post. The lowerportion or base 3 of the post, which is designed to be inserted in the ground, is provided at the lower end With a cross-piece 4, which is 'constructed of thin metal, and is arranged vertically at right angles to the faces of the post and cast integral with the post. The lower end of the post and the lower edge of the cross-piece are sharpened to enable the post to be readily inserted in the ground, and the cross-piece prevents the post moving edgewise in the ground.--
The base 3 of the post is provided near its upper end with a circul'ar band 6, which is connected with' the post by a long brace 7 and short braces 8 and 9, cast integral with the post and the band. The long brace 7 is arranged at right angles to the post, and the short braces are arranged in the same plane as the post. By arranging the braces at dif ferent heights they present a broad surface to the ground and prevent the post leaning, and as the edges of the band 6 and braces are presented to the ground the post can easily be inserted in the ground without digging a post-hole.
The post-band, brac-es, and cross-pieces are cast in a single piece, and the lower edges of the parts are provided with sharp edges, and but little force is required to drive the posts into the ground.
. From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
What I claim is-- A fence-post constructed of thin metal and having an upper portion designed to be larranged above the ground and provided at its edges with longitudinal flanges 2, and having a lower portion or base 3, designed to be 'inserted in the ground, and provided at its lower end with the cross-piece 4, arranged at right angles to the post, the circular band o,V arranged near the upper end of the base, the short braces 8 and 9, arranged in the same plane as the latter, and the long braces 7, arranged at right angles to the post, said braces being arranged at different heights within the band, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. MCCOOL.
