To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT DIAL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Ramsey, in the county of Fayette and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplers; and it has for its object to pro- Vide a device which when a link-pin has been raised to allow the entrance of a link into the draw-head will automatically assume a position beneath said pin and support the same in the raised position until said supporting device is pressed backward by the impingement of the coupling-link against the lower portion thereof, when the pin is allowed to fall and the coupling is efiected without the necessity of the attendant remaining between the cars during the operation.
The novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of a railwaycar body carryingmy improvements, the drawhead being shown in vertical section to illustrate the latter. Fig. 2 is a detail front elevation of the spring-arm and the bracket attached thereto for the support of the link-pin.
In carrying out my invention I may employ the ordinarydraw-head now in use, but slight modifications thereof being necessary to adapt it for the operation of my improvements.
The lip a of the draw-head A, as better illustrated in Fig. 1, is of a construction to readily receive and guide the coupling-link into the draw-head without the assistance of an attendant. The top wall of the draw-head is slotted longitudinally, as illustrated, to afford space for the forward play of the arm, and in the said draw-head I form an interior recess 1), which extends forwardly to the ordinary vertical pin-aperture c, and is designed for the reception and play of the forwardly-extending bracket-pin support of the spring-arm.
The springarm B, which is preferably of the car-wall directly below the attaching-point of the spring-arm and in line therewith, whereby the said arm is pitched forwardly and normally assumes the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The angular bracket D is secured to the spring-arm B, by bolts pass ing through the vertical branch thereof, at an elevation suitable to allow the horizontal pinsupporting branch of Said bracket to move within the recess 1) of the draw-head.
Although the construction of spring-arm and bracket illustrated is preferable, yet it is obvious that the horizontal forwardly-ex tending branch might be formed integral with the spring-arm and perform its functions in an equally satisfactory manner.

In Fig. 1 I have Illustrated mechanism whereby the pin may be raised by an attendant upon the top of the car, when it will be seen that the horizontal branch of the bracket D will assume aposition beneath the pin and support it in the raised position until the coupling-link presses the spring-arm back and allows the pin to fall.

the bar connecting the link-pin with the op erating-lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination, with the draw-head having its top Wall recessed longitudinally and provided with the interior recess and vertical pin-receiving aperture, of the spring-arm secured to the car-wall in line with the longitudinal slot in the drawhead, and provided with the bracket-pin support at a point above its lower end, which extends down to receive the impingement of the coupling-link, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
