Description

Patented- Aug. 12, 1890.
-RUST.-
MA LLETA' NE a H. Q m: I 1H 1 No; 431L091.
UNITED STATES A E'NT, OFFICE.
SAMUEL RUST, OF CINCINNATI, OI-IIO.
MALLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,091, dated August 12, 1890.
' Application filed April '7, 1890. Serial No. 346,931. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL RUST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mallets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention comprises a specific construction of those mallets which have detachable handles; and the improvement consists in providing the inner faces of the two parts of the handle-strap with a rasp or corrugated surface, so as to afford a very secure hold within the circumferential groove of the mallet-head and thereby prevent accidental turning of the latter within the handle, as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is aside elevation of the grooved mallet-head. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the handle and strap detached from said head. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the complete mallet. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the implement taken onthe plane of the divided strap. Fig. 5 is a sectionized plan of the implement.
A represents the head of a wooden mallet or maul or other similar implement.
B is a circumferential or annular groove located about at the mid-length of the head and extending completely around it, which groove is preferably wider at top than at bottom.
O Crepresent the two halves orother parts of a metallic strap capable of fitting snugly around the head or within an annular groove B of the same, which halves terminate with lugs D D, perforated, as seen at d in Fig. 2, to admitatightening-screwE. This two-part strap 0 C may have a socket F, to admit a wooden handle G, as seen in Fig. 2, or said strap may be integral with a handle G, as represented in Figs. 3 and 4, in which event these members 0 C G would usually be made of malleable iron. Furthermore, it is necessary to corrugate or give a rasp-surface to the inner faces of the straps C O, as seen at H H in Fig.2, so as to afford a very secure hold on the wooden head. The mallet is fitted together in the manner seen in Fig. 4, the two parts 0 O of the strap fitting snugly within the circumferential groove B and the screwE being tightened so as to cause the head to be immovably clamped by said strap, which secure grasp is further increased by the rasp or rough surfaces 11 H. It is evident the mallet can now be used-with the same facility as an ordinary implement, and after one edge of the head has been worn down the screw E is unslaoked to relax the clamping action of the roughened strap, and then the head is turned around sufliciently to bring another portion of the edge to a convenient position for work. The screw is then tightened up to clamp the head in this new position and the work resumed, this operation of shifting the head being accomplished in a few minutes and Without requiring any more skill than is necessary to handle a screw-driver. Owing to the secure mannerin which the head is grasped by the roughened strap, these two members can never separate or fly apart, no matter what severe use the mallet may be put to, and the absence of any hole in the head renders it impossible for the latter to crack. This construction also obviates the use of wedges and other unreliable expedients for securing a handle within a perforated head; and when the head has been shifted around so often as 'to be rendered useless,a new head can be applied to the old handle in a few minutes.
,I am aware it is not new to provide various forms of tools with separable or detachable handles, and therefore my claim is not to be construed broadly, but is limited to the specific combination of parts herein described and illustrated.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the mallet-head A, having a circumferential groove B, the detachable handle G, having a pair of straps O C, terminating, respectively, with lugs D D, and a screw E, engaged with said lugs, the inner surfaces of said straps O 0 being roughened or corrugated at H H, to afford a secure hold within said groove B, all as herein described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL RUST.
