Description

(No Model.)
V. WILHELMI.
RANGE BOILER.
Patented Aug"; 12, 1890.
l/VI/E/VTOR ATTUR/VEVE,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
VALENTIN IVI-LHELMI, OE PATERSON, NEWV JERSEY.
RANGE-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 434,075, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed September 4 1889. Serial No. 322,971- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, VALENTIN WILHELMI, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Range-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of boilers that are connected with the water-backs of ranges and cooking-stoves; and the object of my invention is to provide a boiler of this kind, whichis strong and durable and simple in construction.
The invention consists in a rangeboiler composed of a cylindrical shell, a strong ring in each end of the shell, and a head secured to each end of the shell, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved range-boiler. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a part, showing the mannerin which the heads are connected with the shell.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The range-boiler consists of a cylindrical shell or body A, the cap-shaped top head B, and the bottom head 0, the cap-shaped top head having a greater curvature than the bottom head. Said shell and heads may be made of copper, sheet-iron, or any other suitable sheet metal. A short distance from each end the shell A is shaped to form an outwardlyprojecting annular shoulder D. Ateach end, a short distance from said shoulder, the shell is provided with an outwardly-projecting annular flange E. Each head B and O is provided with outwardly projecting annular shoulder F, and along the edge with an outwardly-projecting flange G, having the rim H projecting in a direction toward the open part of the head.
In each end of the shell A a heavy metal ring J is placed in such a manner as to rest on the shoulders D, the outer edges of said rings projecting beyond the ends of the shell,
and the inner faces thereof being flush with l the shell. The heads B and C are then placed on said rings J in such a manner that the shoulders F of said heads rest on the outer edges of the rings J. The rims I-I of the flanges G then project over the flanges E on the ends of the shell and are spun down over the inner faces of said flanges, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and then said flanges G E and the rim H are spun against the side of the shell, as shown in Fig. 1, the rimmed flange of the head forming a hook-shaped flange engaging the flange of the shell, thereby firmly holding the heads on the shell and holding the rings J in place. Then the ends are heated and the joints are sweated in. No riveting is required, the heads are firmly and securely connected with the shell, thereby forming a strong and simple boiler, and the parts can be united very readily. The body of the ring projects beyond the circumference of the main body of the shell, and is adapted to receive the blows due to handling and transportation and imparts greater strength to the shell than when set in a recess flush with the outer surface thereof.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination of a cylindrical boilershell provided with an outwardly-projecting shoulder near one ,end and an outturned flange at said end, a cap-shaped head provided with an outwardly-projecting shoulder near its lower edge and a hook-shaped flange at its lower edge, which engages the outturned flange of the shell, and a metal ring disposed between said shoulders in the annular recess formed thereby, the body of-the ring projecting circumferentially beyond the circumference of the main body of the cylindrical shell, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VALENTIN \VILI'IELMI.
\Vitnesses: I
OSCAR F. GUNZ, JOHN ALONZO STRALEY.
