UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD VILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPRAY-DIFFUSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,066, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed July 2, 1889- Serial No. 316,299. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM MAC- KENZIE HUGHES, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spray-Diifusers, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for spraying oil, and is especially designed to burn oil in connection with steam. By it the steam-supply can be exactly regulated, and by the adjustment of the steamsupply any fouling deposit in the nozzle can be readily removed.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section; Fig. 2, a section through Fig. 1 on the lineoc m; Fig. 3, an end view of the nozzle, and Fig. 4 a transverse section through Fig. 3 on th line y y.
My apparatus consists, generally, of a nozzle A, provided at its delivery end with spray or diffusing plates J. Passing into the center of this nozzle is the oil-nozzle L, wh ich is so arranged as to leave a concentric air-space B, surrounding the outside of the oil-nozzle. Entering the center of the oil-supply is the steam-jet C, the position of which is longitndinally adjustable in the oil-space by turning upon the screw-threads D in the casing of the apparatus. This steam-jet is adjustable by hand-wheel D, turning the hollow shaft K, as indicated. This hollow shaft is supplied with steam by the pipe H entering the exterior casing. Surrounding the hollow pipe is an annular block F, having perf0rations E, and this block fills the space between the tube and the enlarged bore at the rear of the screw-threaded portion of the case and forms a steam-passage from the pipe H to the tubular valve-stem. This valvesupport is held centrally by a gland Q, screwed into the recess in the casing, and the perforated block is used to keep the gland-packing from fouling the steam-passages in the hollow tube, and also aids in making the packing for the gland steam-tight, the gland being screwed up against the packing between it and the perforated block. The steam passes through holes E in the annular block F to the center of the shaft K, passing through the holes N, as shown in Fig. 2. The block F is held in position by suitable stops beneath the pipe H, and has an interior annular opening N, communicating with the holes in the shaft K, as indicated.
It is obvious that by adjusting the steamnozzle C and drawing the same back the sprayer can be readily cleansed by blowing in a strong supply of steam, while the steamsupply can be readily adjusted in the ordinary way.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hydrocarbon injector burner, the combination, with a casing provided with a steam and an oil supply and a nozzle, of a perforated hollow shaft longitudinally adj ustable Within the casing, and a perforated annular block around the shaft at the steam-supply, substantially as described.
2. In a hydrocarbon injector burner, the combination, with a casing provided with a steam and an oil supply and a nozzle, of a perforated hollow shaft within the casing, a perforated annular block around the shaft, and stops for retaining the block under the steam-supply, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES.
Witnesses ANTHONY GREF, H. CONSTANT.
