le it known that I, WILLIAM C. FISH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, in the count-y ot Lucas and State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and uselul Improvements in Spray-Oil Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a t' ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ot ret'- erence marked thereon, which form a part oi this speciiication.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in apparatus t'or burning crude oil, the object thereotl being to provide a means whereby steam may be utilized to raise the oil by producing a vacuum in a chamber, and will carry the oil, intern'iixei'l with steam and air, in the t'orm oi spray under a boiler, so that it can be burned; and it consists more especially in the construction and combination oi. Vthe parts, as will be hereinafter Yfully set Vforth, and speci iically pointed ont in the claims.

The operation of my invention is as Follows: Steam is adnlitted through the pipe A, and from thence to the stealn-chamber G tln'ough passage -way ll. The valvestem F' being slightly removed from its seat, the steam will TOO pass through the steam or jet plug' K and through the mixing-plug L into the burner, creating a vacuum in the oil-chamber m, so as to elevate the oil and carry it mixed with the steam to the burner. Then the turnbutton N is removed from the opening leading to the air-chamber, a certain amount of air will be drawn in said chamber and mixed with the oil and steam. Then the valve I is turned, a portion of the steam will pass around the opening' of said valve and enter the auxiliary steam-chamber G, and, passing around the end of the plug' L, will impel the oil mixed with the steam and air forwardly into the burner. A sufficient quantity of air will be 'drawn into the conical end of the burner to supply the combustion with oxygen. The device can be regulated by turning the valves so as to mix the oil, steam, and air in different proportions, as desired. device the oil can be raised to a great height or drawn from receptacles placed in cellars and away from the furnace, so there is n0 dang'er of the same becoming ignited. The end of the plug L, which is formed substantially into a tube, forces and sprays the oil, and the air-inlets tend to separate the oil.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to use oil as fuel by intermixing the same with steam and air and injecting the same into a furnace where it is burned, and I do not claim such construction, broadly, as my invention; but
That I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An injector-burner for hydrocarbon-furnaces, consisting of a casing communicating with oil and steam supply pipes, a steamchamber and auxiliary steam-chamber ar ranged at opposite ends of the casing, a passage connecting the steam-chambers with the steam-supply, a valve to close communication between the auxiliary steam chamber and passage, an oil-chamber in direct communica tion with the oil-supply, a tubular jet-plug connecting the steam and oil chambers, an injector tube or nozzle leading' from the auxiliary steam-chamber, a mixing-tube leading' .By this.

2. An injector-burner for hydrocarbon-fun naces, consisting of a easing communicating with oil and steam supply pipes, a steamchamber at one end of the casing, connected by a passage with the steam-supply, an oilchamber communicating directly with the oil? supply, a tubular jet-plug connecting' the steam and oil chambers, an air-chamber adjoining the oil-chamber, an injector-tube, a mixing-tube leading 'from the oil-chamber to the injector-tube and provided with lateral openings communicating with the air-chamber, a valved opening in the side of the airchamber, and a valve adapted ,to close the inlet end of the plug', substantially as described.
In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing communicating' with oil and steam supply pipes, a steamchamber and auxiliary steam-chamber at opposite ends of the casing, a passage connecting the steam-chamber with the steam-supply, a valve to close communication between the auxiliary steam-chamber and passage, an oilchamber communicating directly with the oil-supply, an air-chamber between the oil and auxiliary steam chambers having an opening in its outer wall, an open burner-tube iiared at one end and projecting at its other end within a furnace, an injector-tube leading from the auxiliary steam-chamber and having its discharge end secured centrally within the flared end of the burner-tube, a mixing-tube extending from the oil-chamber to the injector-tube and provided with lateral openings ,communicating with the airchamber, a valve or turn-button to close the opening in the wall of the air-chamber, and a valve adapted to close the inlet end of the jet-tube, substantially as described.
