ATTORNEY."
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE L. HOWE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE EBERI-IARD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CLlP-COCKEYE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,045, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed March 18, 1889. Renewed February 21, 1890. Serial No. 341,288. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE L. HOWE, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olip-Oockeyes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in clip-cockeyes for harness, the same having a universal joint; and it consists in certain features of construction, and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying; drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan.
Arepresents the clip, the same having straps a, that embrace and are riveted to the tug, and having a circular loop a, the Wire of which is round in cross-section. This variety of clip is cheaply made of wrought metal by passing the same through rolls having grooves'of such variable form and depth as will shape the clip ready for bending.
The cockeye 13 consists of a link approximately in the form shown, having aneye I) for engaging loosely with the loop of the clip, and having a larger eye B for engaging, for
instance, the fastening on the whiffletree. The side members of the cockeye curve inward, as shown, so that the loop of the clip is confined in eye I); but the sides of the cock eye are separated far enough to receive a strap a of the clip in assembling the parts, and to brace and strengthen the sides of the cockeye at the bend thereof, where they are reenforced by slight external ribs 12 With my improved construction the desired strength is had with less metal than with the ordinary forms of clip-cockeye, and consequently can be made at less initial cost.
What I claim is- A clip-cockeye consisting of a clip having In testimony whereof 'I sign this specification, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 9th day of November, 1888.
EUGENE L. HOWE. Witnesses:
F. F. OoNNER, M. O. SENsENY.
