S. T. RICHARDSON. GAR COUPLING;
No. 434,000. Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
Elf/bond 01% m: Monms PETERS m, mum-1.11m, WAsHmGrq IL UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL T. RICHARDSON, OF GILMER, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING..-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,000, dated. August 12, 1890.
Application filedMay 14;, 1890- Serial No. 351,883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilmer, Upshur county, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the drawings and figures marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved twin car-couplers. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
My invention consists in the following construction and combination of parts, which will first be fully described, and the points of novelty then set forth in the claims.
1 and 2 represent two of my improved coupling-heads in the act of being coupled.
3 and at are the draw-bars to which said heads are respectively attached or formed part of.
5 are the anchor-shaped hooks which form part of the coupling-heads.
6 are pins or projections formed on each side of the coupling near the bases of the hooks 5, the purpose of which is to prevent the coupling-link from dropping too low in the recesses in rear of the hooks and thereby becoming wedged or caught therein.
7 are pivot-s made centrally and horizontally through the coupler near its apex.
8 are triggers or catches formed on or attached to each end of the pivots 7, the outer ends of which are so formed as to take into notches in the coupling-link.
9 is the coupling-link of the usual type. It is provided with a series of notches 10, within which the triggers 8 rest and support the link in a position to be coupled or to engage both couplers automatically upon th coming of the cars together.
11 are curved recesses at the rear base of each of the hooks 5, so as to prevent Wedging at that point and to give the link 9 free play.
To set the link for coupling, the link '9 is slipped over one of the upper hooks 5 until it rests in the recess 11 or pin 6. The triggers 8 are then swung upwardly, so as to engage the notches 10 in the link and support the same in the position shown by Fig. 1.
In coupling two cars the forward end of the link 9 will be projected over upon the opposite hook 5, when the link will slide up on the said hook until it drops over the rear end and falls by gravity behind the same. In the meantime the triggers 8 become disengaged by the lifting of the link and swing downward into a vertical position.
Should one of the upper hooks 5 break, the coupler can be reversed, so as to bring the lower hook thereon uppermost.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A car-coupler having a hook formed thereon, a trigger pivoted to the coupler and projecting beyond the hook, so as to support the link. I f
2. The combination of a coupler having a hook, a link independent of the coupler and adapted to pass over the hook, and a trigger pivoted in the coupler adapted to support the link.
3. The combination of a coupler having a hook, an open recess in the rear thereof, pins or projecting supports adjacent to the recess, and a link independent of the coupler.
at. A coupling-link having notches on the side thereof, for the purpose set forth.
SAMUEL T. RICHARDSON.
