Description

(No Model.)
W. E. GEORGE & J. A MQGINNESS.
WAGON END GATE.
No. 433,593. Patented Aug. 5, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM E. GEORGE AND J OIIN A. MCGINNESS, OF HARLAN, IO 'VA;
WAGON EN D-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,593, dated. August 5, 1890. Application filed April 17, 1890. Serial No. 348,327. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WVILLIAM E. GEORGE and JOHN A. MoGINNEss, citizens of the United States, residing at Harlan, in the county of Shelby and State of Iowa, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Vagon End-Gates; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in wagon end-gates, and it is an improvement on Letters Patent granted to us by the United States on the th day of November, 1889, and numbered 414,395; and the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangenientrof pivoted bars which connect the end-gate to the vehicle-body, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointedoutin the appended claims.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate our invention, in Which- Figure 1 is a side view of aportion of a vehicle-body, showing the end-gate raised or closed; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate down or open.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a vehicle-body, and B the end-gate thereof. To the side of the endgate is pivoted one end of a bar a, as at a,
while the opposite end is free, and when the gate is up or closed receives over its end a loop 1), whereby the gate is held in position. This bar aforesaid is provided with a slot 1), through which passes a bolt 0, that is also connected to the end 0' of a bard, which latter in turn is pivoted to the side of the wagonbody, as shown at (1. Thus it will be seen that when the gate is operated the loop is raised, clearing the upper end of the bar a, when the bolt will slide in the slot and limit the movement of the gate as Well as forming a sliding hinged joint between these two bars, and it is simple in operation, durable, and cheap to manufacture.
' Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, the bar (I, provided with the slot 1), and pivoted to the side of the gate, the bar d, pivoted at one end to the body, the opposite end having a bolt entering said slot, the holding-loop, end-gate, and wagon-body, all as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we affiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM E. GEORGE. JOHN A. MCGINNESS.
