Description

B. F. JAMES.
JOURNAL BOX.
No. 433,525 Patented Aug. 5, 1890.
V @Mh W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. JAMES, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,525, dated August 5, 1890.
Application filed May 29, 1890.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. JAMES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of'Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Journal Bearings or Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, in which drawings like letters of reference indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is an end view of my preferred form of construction, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
In detail, (1 indicates the body of the box; I), the cap; 0, a projecting lip upon the cap; d e, hinges; f, an overhanging arm upon the box; and g h, screws.
The construction and operation will be readily understood on reference to the drawings. I
The body of the box maybe of the ordinary or usual form of construction, excepting that instead of the employment of an ordinary removable eap I hinge the cap to the body at one side, and at the opposite side I arrange ad j USIlDg-SCI'OWS, so that the wear may be readily taken up by the turning of these screws. I prefer that the two Wings 6 of the hinge be made integral with the body of the box, and that the wing cl be made integral with the cap. If, however, the box or bearing be long or.intended to bear severe strain, then the number of wings and size of hinge, together with the size of pivot, will be varied according to circumstances. At the side of the box opposite the hinge portion 1 provide an overhanging arm or part f, and the lip c on the cap is arranged to lie below the overhanging lip or wing f, the space between the lower surface of the wing fand the portion of the box below itbeinggreater than the thickness of the lip o to allow for adj ustment. I prefer, also, that the set or adjusting screws g h be made-to bear. directly opposite each other, thus preventing all strain or tendency to warp the device.
It will readily be seen that a greater num- Serial no. 353.553. (No model.)
ber of set or adjusting screws may be employed, and that their location may be varied as circumstances may direct. In the smaller boxes, however, such as illustrated, which are designed especially for use in lawn-mowers, the construction shown is considered by me the best.
The form of the construction of the hinge portion may be varied as desired, and if a box or bearin g is required, in the employment of which it becomes necessary to remove the journal from its bearing without longitudinal movement, then the overhanging portion f may be made to be turned on a pivot out of the path of the free side of the cap, or the overhanging clamp portion may be made separate and removable.
If desired, the inside of the box may be recessed in the usual manner for the reception of the Babbitt metal.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A journal hearing or box having the cap hinged thereto and having an overhanging wing f, in combination with the cap hinged as aforesaid to the box and provided with a projection to lie under the overhanging part f, and one or more setscrews, substantially as shown. A
2. The combination of a journal-box body with a movable cap and overhanging wing to fasten the body and cap together and provided with one or more set-screws, substantially as shown.
3. The combination of journal-box body at, having overhanging wing f, the cap I), hinged to the body and having projection o, and one or more set-screws, substantially as shown.
4. The combination of a jonrnal-box body with a cap hinged thereto and provided with a projection c, and a holding-wing provided with set-screws to bear against the part c, substantially as shown. v
