Illlu M III @NVENTDH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN S. MEADERJOF PAVVTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE PAIVTUOKET MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOLT-HEADI NG MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,483, dated August 5, 1890.
Application filed March 26,1890. Serial No. 345,413. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. MEADER, of the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolt-Heading Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to bea specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Like letters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a iront elevation of a portion of a bolt-heading machine to show the location and use of my improvement. Fig. A is a vertical section on the line :1; 0c of Fig. 3, with the hammers and levers in side elevation.
My invention is applicable to machines for heading bolts, and has for its object the protect-ion of the lower slide, whichcarries a hammer, from wear by water and scale in the operation of forging the bolt-head.
It consists of a trough having its upper surface convex, and furnished with longitudinal upwardly-projecting lips on its front and rear and downwardly-projectingears, by which it is fastened to the slide, as hereinafter fully specified.
In the drawings, A A represents the crosshead of a bolt-heading machine. On each of its four arms it has a groove, in which, respectively, a slide B is movable by alever C. The slides B have lugs a, which each have a screw-threaded hole, within which a screwthreaded rod 1) is adjustable. The rods l) are thus each adjustable to have a hearing at the inner end against the hammer or forging-die D. The dies D are each adjustably secured to the slide B by a screw-bolt c. A
heading die orhammerE is movable reciprocatingly in a direction at a right angle to thecross-head from rear to front and back again.
F is the usual tubular bushing or guard.
A metallic trough G is bent in the form' seen in Fig. 1, having its convex side up. It has in front downwardly-projecting ears m, and longitudinally on its front and rear edge upwardly-projecting lips n. It is fastened by screws or otherwise upon the upper surface of the lower slide B, which is properly shaped to receive it, and the cross-head is cut away in this vicinity to give space for the movement of the slide 13, so provided with the trough G. The cross-head should be cutaway to leave a sloping surface s on each side.
In forming bolt-heads the bolt-blank is headed to a forging heat and is placed in the machine and there held by jaws (not shown) 50 to receive the hammering of the dies D E. I11 order to keep the dies cool and to prevent their injury by contact with the heated blank, jets of Water are discharged upon them. The hammered surfaces of the bolt-head scale in forging, and these thin scales, mixing and carried away by the water, would work into the grooves if not prevented bya suitable device, and there form a grit, which would rapidly wear away the grooves and the slides which move therein.
The purpose of my invention is the protection of the lower slide in its groove. This I accomplish by means of my trough G, which extends over the top of said slide in front and on each side. The Water falling from above is carried to either side by the convexity of the surface of the trough, and cannot flow either to the front or rear, because prevented by the lips m. It drips from So the trough G upon the downwardly-sloping surfaces 8 of the cross-head to the floor. In this manner the grit and water arekept from the groove in which said lower slide travels.
It will be seen by Fig. 4 that the circular bushing or guard F, which takes and conducts away the water and scale from the die E, projects forward from the cross-head a sufficient distance to discharge its drip into the trough G.
Instead of making the trough G in a separate piece, it can be cast in one piece with the slide I), in which case the groove should be made of detachable cheek-pieces, which can be removed for the proper insertion of 5 the slide in the groove.
I claim as a novel and useful invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a bolt-heading machine, the trough G herein described,in combination with a ham- 10o mer-slide B and a grooved cross-head, substantially as shown.
BENJAMIN S. MEADER.
