WHIP.
No. 432,486. Patented July 15, 1890.
" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REVILO T. GOWDY, OF \VESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HARRY M. GOWDY, OF SAME PLACE.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,486, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed April 8, 1890. Serial No- 347,07l. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REVILO T. GOWDY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Vest field, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Whips, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of whips, to the end, particularly, of imparting characteristics of stiff-- ness and retractiveness internally in a whip, as well, also, as to form means for the protection of the internal parts of the whip; and the invention consists in a whip having structural features, all substantially as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
Under this invention certain of the internal parts of the whip comprise or are formed by stiff hair or bristlessuch, for instance, as
horse-hair or hogs bristles. The saidinternal parts, constituted either in whole or in part of the material stated, may be either the lining for the outer covering, or the core, or both, the employment of hair having characteris- 2 5 tics of stiffness and retractiveness internally in a whip being deemed original with me.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of the length of a whip with parts thereof shown as torn and 0 broken away to most clearly illustrate the internal construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the whip. Fig. 3 is a view of a whipcore made under this invention, and Fig. 4
is an illustration of an improvedAvhip-lining 5 also made under this invention. Fig. 5 represents the employment of some of the strands of hair extended to form a strengthening-core for the loop at the whip-tip.
I deem that the principal advantage'ariso ing out of the invention consists in the provision of the lining a for the outer plaitcd covering Z), whereby the internal parts of the whip are protected from the effects of moisture or other agency, and whereby said lining 5 itself actively conduces to augment the capabilities in the whip for resiliency and flexibility and I therefore fabricate a lining essentially comprising hair or bristles in its composition. In practice I provide haircloth wherein at least the warps consist of hair, although in such cloth, as I deem preferable for use, the weft is formed of textile material, such as cotton or linen. The whip having been made up of core (Z, and rattan or other sidings c, or in any approved manner. and before plaiting, is covered or wrapped with the said hair fabric, after which it is plaitcd. In order to increase the efficiency of the lining both as to its imperviousness and its capabilities for flexibility and resiliency, the hair-cloth is subjected to a coating f,
consisting of a solution of india-rubber or gutta-percha. This solution, applied in a liqnid form, fills and closes all the interstices in the hair fabric, and when dried increases the solidityof the whip-lining. In the application of the lining in the make-up of a whip the same is applied so that the hair-warps there of run longitudinally of the whip.-
hen the core is formed of the still? hair, the same is made up into core lengths suitable for the various lengths of whips by bundling the hair strands and confining same in any suitable manner, as by winding same, and I maycombine with the longitudinally-disposed 7 5 strands of hair slender strips of other material, such as rawhide or rattan.
As shown in Fig. 5, certain of the longitudinal strands of hair may be, before the plaiting, extended forward and then turned back on the tip to form a loop g, the plaiting over the loop afterward being performed, as usual, and the finished loop having the hair core is greatly strengthened.
That I claim as my invention is 1. A whip having the internal portions thereof within the outer plaitcd covering inclosed by a fabric, the longitudinal strands of which consist of stiff hair, for the purpose set forth.
2. A whip having internal portions thereof 0 within the outer plaitcd coveringinelose d by a fabric of hair-cloth havinga layer of rubber or gutta-percha thereon, for the purpose set forth.
REVILO T. GOWDY.
